Jeff,

Thank you for your reply.

I checked with the ISP and obtained the settings. Whether my original
settings, or the new ones, made ABSOLUTELY no affect on this symptom.
Remember this happens even WHEN I'M OFFLINE after a session!

The IE6 on WinXP doesn't do this. The IE6 on Win98 does. same dialup
line, different modem.

I finally found the resource meter
start/run/rsrcmtr
it shows all three constantly above 80% free, and usually around 83%,
but never ever saw drop below 80 at any time, even when 'hung'.
Perhaps, the meter hangs too.

This seems like an internal problem on the Win98, since after logging
off google, the home screen appears, but I can't even pull down the
history menu for often up to 2 minutes. Worse, any frenetic clicking
just hangs and need reboot.

Any ideas on how to 'reset IE6 on the Win98 so it was like it was a
couple of months ago?

ARGGG!

forgot to mention another symptom: This hanging symnptom started
appearing the same time that IE6 started 'forgetting' it's supposed to
dial up. Well, to some degree.

After reboot, open IE6, dial up menu instantly appears. After being
on line for a while, and after starting to experience hanging,
cleaning out and closing IE6. Upon reopening application, IE6 seems
to forget it's supposed to dial. The screen just sits there blank for
a long time. Usually, does figure out it's supposed to dial and does
so.

Try step 3 here:
http://myhosting.com/wiki/Windows_95-98_Dial-up_Issues_and_Tips#Reinst...ing_the

I have seen you additional symptom of waiting after a restart before - it is
caused by the fact that in some modes of operation IE does not drop the
connection immediately it is closed. Therefore, on restart it goes through
a process of checking whether or not the connection is still alive before
deciding that it has really been closed and restarting the session. This
feature is designed to speed things up by not requiring a full reconnect
sequence when IE is closed and then quickly re-opened, but sometimes it has
exactly the opposite effect. The length of this delay, however, indicates
that there is some problem with IE checking the status of the connection.
This might be the same cause as the other pauses - for instance a single
comms error that would normally only require a re-transmits is causing a
long delay while the connection is re-checked. This is beyond my knowledge
of IE. I think you are down to replacing components (as above) until you hit
on the right one.

Jeff,

Thank you for excellent reply.

Oddly, I have now lost my ability to save website page as .mht !?

Although I can open previously saved .mht files I can no longer create
them?!

I did uninstall the modem and reinstall, but that hasn't helped.

As the problem gets worse, I'm starting to get quite a few
"..performed an illegal operation..." and gets killed.

I can't uninstall IE6, because it was IE5 on the disk, then installed
newer version. This lack of ability to be able to recreate EXACTLY
where and what is the reason I am so reluctant to perform updates.
The updates disappear over time and then what do you do when there's a
problem?

I'll try cautiously removing and reinstalling all the mechanisms for
the network connections to see if one has been corrupted. But I don't
think corrupted is as likely as updated and 'improved' causing the
problem.

Will try and see what happens. Any ideas what happened to my ability
to save .mht?

Cannot Save Web Page as a Web Archive File
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/198061

The ability to save a Web page as a Web archive file is provided by the Inetcomm.dll
file, which is installed by Outlook Express. You may need to install Outlook
Express. If Outlook Express is installed, inetcomm.dll may not be registered, or
may have been deleted or damaged.

Click Start> Run, type the following and click OK:

regsvr32 inetcomm.dll

Considering your other problems, you might need to try a repair of Internet
Explorer. Open Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs, select the Internet Explorer
entry then click Add/Remove. Select the the Repair option, and continue.

Back to you, Jeff....... Wink

What happens when you try to save a web page as mht?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/198061
Cannot Save Web Page as a Web Archive File

If you can catch the details of one of the illegal operations that may give
a clue to the cause of the problems.

Have you the space to install Firefox (if you can still find the
'98-compatible version somewhere)? Although I _am_ in the camp that
isn't very fond of IE, it might still be worth it for an IE user as a
diagnostic aid, i. e. to see if your problems are specific to IE or not.

Thank you for that tidbit.

regsvr32 inetcomm.dll shows as 'failed'

Yes, I just uninstalled Microsoft Explorer in trying to clean out
superflous stuff. Oddly that webpage didn't save as mht, but another
one did ?!

Yet, the inetcomm32.dll doesn't exist. I wonder how it saved?

WOW!!!

Once again a Microsoft website hangs my system!!!

I went there, and read that Explorer was needed. I remember having
recently uninstalled it to clear out clutter. However, I could save
an another website ?! Worse after going there, I've had to do 2
complete sequences of cleaning out my IE6, and rebooting. Very
irksome.

When I tried to save the website [the one that caused my comment]
as .mht there was no choice to save it in that format. Now it seems
reasonable that uninstalling Express caused it. However, right after
that I went to a different website and saved it as mht. How would
that be possible?

Oh, well. Time to try reinstalling IE6 and Express and see what
happens.

Any ideas as to why I have those two TCP/IP systems in my registry?

I only have the internet dial up here and have never had another
network on this machine. But those two could have been there all
along, I would never know.

Even replying has turned into a nightmare. I don't know whether to go
to the last message someone responded with, or to reply individually.
My display has no thread, only chronological, so I see a multitude of
my postings with no reference to whom I was responding.

Not as important as how much this system is starting to pause and
hang. Getting very bad. More and more.

To all...

What browser should I use with Win98?

Firefox? Opera?

I went to Opera's website and it mentioned free and register else ads
pop up. Does that mean register and pay and no more ads? or, does
that mean free, register, and no more ads?

Firefox is free, doesn't require registering, and has no ad.s. (Ditto IE
of course.)

You must have Outlook Express installed. You should be accessing the
newsgroups with OE or some similar browser rather than using the web
interface, especially if IE is unreliable. You can remove and reinstall
each of the networking components in turn (as you did for the dial-up
networking component) or just delete and reinstall the lot. I haven't
checked, but I suspect re-installing IE does not reinstall the networking
components. Have you checked how much history and cache IE is set to
maintain? If this figure is large IE will pause while it searches or
rearranges the cache, and these pauses can become large (with a relatively
idle CPU, as it is waiting for disk).

Same with Opera.....free, no ads, no registration. I can't imagine what Robert is
looking at.

Here is the download page:
http://www.opera.com/download/
However I suggst using the Classic Installer instead of the installer linked there.
Use the link on that page for "Show other versions":
http://www.opera.com/download/?custom=yes

Then select "Windows", then select "Opera 9.64", then select "Classic Installer,
English(US)".
Click the Download button.

Nowhere is there any mention of registering, ads, or anything else.

Thank you for this URL!!!

Just curious why classic and not the default?

I went there and it took three tries before I could download from the
website. It was like IE6 knew it was being replaced and started
retaliating.

Only 4MB and works better than the 44MB of IE6. Hmmmm

It's an easy browser to use. Format looks a lot like IE so the
transition was easy. Plus, now there are no more pesky 'hangs'. This
Opera really zips around the internet for me. Thanks again. Is there
a 'users group' for questions?

Set up a newsreader account using the server, news.opera.com
There are a number of groups there, but you would be served well by opera.general

news://news.opera.com/opera.general

You can also view it using the built-in newsreader in Opera...pasting that link into
Opera will open its newsreader mode.

There are also Opera web forums:
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/

Also, the Opera Support Desk:
http://www.opera.com/support/

There are certain web sites that don't always work correctly in Opera, or the site
does not consider Opera a supported browser (which is aggravating). Amazon's
feature to read parts of a listed book does not open in Opera, for example. Some
applications on Facebook don't work in Opera. There are other sites with
incompatibilities also. I like it however, and use it for most browsing, switching
to Firefox when I need to use an unsupported feature. IE rarely gets opened
here....

I recommended the Classic Installer because it does not use the Microsoft Installer
(.msi files), and so may cause less trouble on older systems using Win98.

Thank you. Wow! this Opera has been trouble free.
