can't get windows update

Hi!

After I installed net framework version 2.0 redistributive package (x86). I
was

highly advised to install the latest security package for it, but when I
tried to get

windows update, it kept giving this message:Thank you for your interest in

obtaining updates from our site.

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems
only.
To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh
operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

I use windows 98se and EI6, and was able to get win update immediately prior
to

this installation. (I got windows discussion from my favourites)

Does any one have a clue why this would happen?

It's a known problem, and one that Microsoft will have to fix. Meanwhile,
try deleting Temporary Internet Files in Internet Options, also delete
History and Cookies. Might help, according to some reports (but others say
not.) Restart your system and try again. Then keep trying every so often.

Yes, I actually got it running again from 98 GUY's post, by putting
microsoft.com in trusted sites and deleting temporary Internet files,
followed by restarting the computer.

Can you tell me what v6 and v4 is please? (I suppose that is some thing most
people know)

Here is my most comprehensive set of instructions to get WU working
for win-98. There are a few other things that others have posted that
I should roll into this later. But for now, try these:

First, I'm pretty sure you need to do the following:

1) add *.microsoft.com to your trusted zone list
2) enable everything (all actions) for the trusted zone
3) clear IE cache (including off-line content)

Then close IE and open it again.

Clearing cookies is something you can try, but it can be a pain if you
have some on-line settings (like banking, airline or frequent-flyer
website registrations, on-line forums, etc) so if you delete your
cookies you're going to lose all that, but I don't think that cookies
are involved in this WU problem.

Enter this in the address bar:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

You should see this:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 9 Cool

If you don't see that, then you have a wrong entry in your registry
somewhere (so that needs to be fixed).

Next, according to this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817144

You might have an entry in your registry called "post platform".
Search your registry for "post platform". If you have it, then read
the above MS kb article. If not, then continue.

Finally, here is what will probably fix it for you.

Navigate to your C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate directory.

You will probably see a V4 and a Cabs subdirectory in addition to
maybe a few dozen files.

Delete all files (don't delete the V4 and the Cabs directory). If
you're nervous about doing that, then make a backup directory there
and move the files into it.

So there should be no files in C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate.

Go into the V4 directory. There might be a few files there, and maybe
a temp directory. Delete everything (including the temp directory)
EXCEPT for the file iuhist.xml. Then go back into C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate. MS says you can delete the Cabs directory, but I
just went into the cabs directory and deleted what was there (1 file I
think).

That's it. Close all IE windows and then open IE and try Windows
Update.

Here's a few more observations:

I just went to WU and did the check for updates and viewed the items
to be downloaded and then cancelled the session without downloading
anything.

I then went back to WU and got the mac message. I cleared the cache
and was able to get back into WU. I then exited and went back in, and
got the mac message, etc.

I did that a few times until clearing the cache didn't work.

So basically don't mess with it too much. If you get in, then get
your stuff and don't play with it.

Does anyone know if there is an ActiveX cache? There are references
to it on the net, but if anyone knows where it is, or how to clear it,
then please tell. If something called an ActiveX cache does exist,
and if it's not cleared as part of clearing the IE temp files, then
maybe that's the answer to this WU thing.

Or maybe it's an active-x plugin that needs to be un-installed /
deleted?

One other thing. Java cache? Does WU use java? What about jscript?
Does that have a cache? How to you clear it?

Hi 98 Guy,

I gave up on Windows 98 SE, not because of the Updates, but because of
the Graphics Drivers. Installing the proper Graphics Driver for my
motherboard, messes up the display on the monitor.

However, the simpliest way to upgrade / update Windows Update, is to
download and install Internet Explorer 6. Once Internet Explorer 6 is
installed, Windows Update works fine.

I reformatted the Hard Drive. Installed Windows 98. Then upgraded to
Windows 98 SE Upgrade CD. Then download and installed Internet Explorer 6.
Once you reboot, you go to Windows Update and apply all the Updates for
Windows 98 SE.

Simple! Only the Graphics messes up, making Windows 98 SE unusable.
Installed on a Motherboard with an Intel 64-bit Processor.

A "messed up display" on your monitor sound like you're trying to
describe a situation where the horizontal sync rate that the video
card is generating is not compatible with your (CRT?) monitor,
resulting in an incoherent (but still visible) raster image. To
solve that situation, you need to change your refresh rate to
something your monitor can handle. Perhaps your monitor is not
correctly installed. You should at least get a working display when
you adjust your resolution down to 640 x 480.

An alternate explanation is that you have a PCI-E video card, or a
really new motherboard (less than 3 years old) and the integrated
graphics adapter does not have win-98 drivers. You should at least be
able to install a secondary video card in an AGP or PCI slot and use
that when you run win-98.

The topic of windows-updates not working correctly for windows-98 is
some-what old, and originated because many systems that once worked
fine accessing the WU web site began to not work properly for some
reason, which many have speculated was caused by some code changes by
Microsoft on their update site, perhaps related to making the site
compatible with Vista.

In any case, there is more to it than simply using IE6. Many win-98
systems have been using IE6 for years, and the WU problem happens even
when you are using IE6.
