We have a cd with backup files from a previous version of Windows. Now, when
I try to restore the files, the computer shuts down in order to protect
itself from a serious error.

Does anyone understand what the problem is? Can you give me any suggestions
of what I should do in order to get the files?

You need to determine which program (name and version) was used to create
the backup files. Then, be sure you are using the exact same program to
restore the files. If you still get the error then you need to find out if
there is a repair or verify function available for the type of backup file
that was created, or if there is some other program that can extract some or
all of the backup files.

It all depends on determining exactly what procedure was used to create that
backup in the first place.

We don't know which program was used. And anyway, we are not using '95
anymore, so I would imagine we wouldn't have the program anyway. What should
we do?

You may not need to use the same operating system, but you will almost
certainly need to use the same backup program. For instance, the backup
that Microsoft provided with W95 can be installed on W98 to restore files.

Can you identify the names of files on the disks? Often there's an index
file on the first or last disk in a set, and the name of that file, or the
names used for the backup files themselves, will indicate, at least
approximately, what program was used.

We have a whole stack of CD's with backup files. All of the files say they
are 'windows backup files', except for one of the CD's, which has a file name
which ends '.bku' Does this mean anything to you?

When I use the Windows Backup Wizard, my computer shuts down because it has
'encountered an error'.

Where does it say 'windows backup files'? Is this a label someone has
written on the disk, or is it stored in a file somewhere on the disk, or is
it the file type that is displayed in an Explorer window?

If you right-click on the file when viewing it in Explorer and look at
properties, what is the File Type and what is the extension? What is a
typical file name?

I can't find the extension at all. In properties, under file type, it says
'windows backup file'.
The files were named by whoever did the backup. They are backups of data
from different programs.

just in case you were all waiting in suspense to find out what would happen:

our computer fix-it man came in and I told him the problem. Turns out all
you have to do it paste the backup onto the computer instead of just back it
up from the disk. Don't ask why, but it worked, and that's great.
