Hello Everybody,

My problem in brief:

After installing ms dos, and then win95 everything works fine, until i
try to boot in into dos with f8. After booting once into dos succesfully
the system does not boot anymore at all. fdisk /mbr, does not help, even
formatting the primary partition did not help.
I had to delete and recreate the partition.
The only reason i can think of is, that im using a 60gb hard disk, that
was limited (via jumpers) to 32 gb , in order to be detected by the bios
(award modular 4.5.1...) Any ideas?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Details:

The system is a Pentium II MMX, 300 Mhz with a 60GB Seagate Disk and
32mb ram.

My intention was/is to set up some retro-system in order to play old games.

I did the following:

1. The Harddisk was not detected by the Bios, (Award Modular 4.5.1) so i
set the jumper to limit it to 32GB.

2. With fdisk i created a primary partition C: with 500mb, where i
installed MS-DOS 6.22.

3. I installed the DOS CD-ROM Drivers & Set the BLASTER Enviroment var.
and everything worked allright so far -> Tested a couple of old Dos Games.

4. After that i run setup.exe from the (Microsoft Windows 95 with USB
Drivers) Disk and windows seemed to install properly. I set the install
directory to c:\win95 instead of the suggested c:\windows. As far as i
remembered (from updating win 3.1 to win95 a couple of years ago), that
was required in order to be able to boot into dos afterwards (with f4 or fCool

5. After rebooting a couple of times and setting everything up windows
seemed to work fine too.

6. After one of the following reboots i wanted to test if i can boot
into ms-dos with f8. It worked fine, and i was quite satisfied. Again i
tested some dos-games Wink . But now the big misterical issue:

7. After rebooting again, the pc hangs instead of showing:
Starting Microsoft Windows 95... (or whatever it says normally)

neither:
Starting MS-DOS... appears

There is no error message, just NOTHING happens.
I tried to reboot with CTRL-ALT-DEL and also turing the power off and
on, but everytime the computer hangs at that point.

8. I booted from a floppy, tried to run "fdisk /mbr" but this did not
fix the problem too. After booting from a floppy i could access all the
files and data on the primary partition.

9. I tried to run c:\win95\win.exe and got the blue-screen-of-death
saying: "Error initialising a VFAT Device. A Device/Ressource required
for VFAT is not present/available. System holds" (in my case the message
was in german, but i tried to translate it)

10. Finally, after even formatting the primary partition and running
ms-dos' fdisk /mbr the problem still occured. I deleted the primary
partition with fdisk and recreated it again, formatted c: and
reinstalled ms-dos , reinstalled windows95 and the same problem appeared.

I reproduced this already three times, but have no clue what is causing
the problem Sad. The only reason i can think of, is something about the
60GB hard disk, limited with the jumper to 32gb...

Id appriciate any suggestions.
Thank you in ADvance,
michael.

Yes, this was exactly my problem and the solution helped, however im not
very satisfied to hear, that dual boot is not possible in my case.
Thanks a lot,

It is possible if you use third party boot managers or if you put your
DOS files in a different folder (not in the root) and change a couple of
files to reflect the new location of the files.

Known issue with Win95 SR2 and "Previous Version MS-DOS", though it
can be fixed less destructively.... or you have a different problem.

Win95 SR2 offers the "Previous Version MS-DOS" option in F8 menu, and
it will boot that session OK. What fails is the return - and the fix
is to do a Sys C: from a Win95 SR2 DOS diskette boot.

The above is true if C: file system is FAT16. If C: is FAT32, then
the "Previous Version of MS-DOS" won't boot, because MS-DOS 6.xx and
earlier (i.e. all stand-alone MS-DOS) aren't compatible with FAT32.

As above. Don't use "Previous Version of MS-DOS" at all - it's
generally a less effective DOS than those bundled with Win9x - and
especially avoid this in:
- Win95 SR2.x
- Win98xx if C: is FAT32

For safety, its best to delete or rename-away C:\*.DOS in such
systems, and/or set the relevant setting in MSDOS.SYS to prevent the
F8 menu from offering "Previous Version of MS-DOS" for such OSs.

If you set "Exit to DOS.pif" to "Specify a new...", you can tailor
this to run your DOS games effectively. I found this worked like a
charm through the Win9x era, though the real surprise was that most
DOS games worked fine from Windows itself.

Exceptions that needed DOS mode ("Exit to DOS.pif"):
- Jill of the Jungle series
- Indy 500
- some Lemmings
- a tank game that looks like a filled-in Battlezone

There may have been another one or two, but that really isn't a lot
compared to the 50-odd I used all the time and another 50-odd I played
with occasionally. The Jills were the only ones I really missed.

I don't think that's a factor. Win95 SR2 (as would be the case for
USB) is known to fail after a "Previous DOS" session.

Yup.

That means IO.SYS either doesn't load, or dies before displaying that

>8. I booted from a floppy, tried to run "fdisk /mbr" but this did not

The problem is not in the MBR, but somewhere between PBR and IO.SYS
etc. and fix for that is Sys C: from a Win95 SR2 DOS diskette boot.

That's to be expected. Firstly, it's Win.com, and secondly, it won't
run from an older DOS version and lastly, it will fail in that way
because the autoloads (HiMem.sys, maybe IFSHlp.sys) are not present.
