A debugger can reveal the load points for the EXE file sections.
Otherwise, I guess you could note whether or not there was the appropriate
performance improvement. Or, make a copy of the originals and compare that
copy to the files after Walign is run (or let SFC do it for you). That will
at least tell you that the update was done, even if it doesn't indicate
whether or not it was done correctly.

Hi Jeff,
I ran it and it went fast according to my log file, ~1s. This is pretty
quick for any program. I checked the MS KB site and it says that for win98
and its 2nd ed. there are two similiar programs, walign and winalign. I
check the registry location and this was not the same as in the KB article,
which focused on winalign as if the are interchangeable.
I ran sfc and found only 2 files that needed updating; HwlndoD.vxd and
MSISYS.vxd.
I have been using FireFox 2.0 and the registry location is in explorer
folder down under. Does this maintaince program work with that shell?

Walign takes only a moment to run. It doesn't touch the two programs you
mentioned. Winalign is quite different and is definitely not
interchangeable. Walign does not pay any attention to the internet browser
you have installed.

Thanks Jeff,
I have been just letting it run in the Task Scheduler folder on its on
shedule. One other question though; the run path in the scheduler is stated
[walign]. No other path. Is this correct or should it be
[C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WALIGN.EXE].?.
p.s. Australia! hah! which part? I am in Ohio.

Walign needs to be run once only. It does its job and goes away. It
shouldn't need to be in the task scheduler at all - perhaps it was installed
there to force it to run one time, but after that you don't need it at all.
There might be a case for winalign to be in task scheduler, in case you
install old software that needs aligning, but I wouldn't think it's worth
the trouble.
The program name on its own is probably enough for task scheduler, because I
would expect the system to look in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ by default.
I'm in sunny Sydney, which is wet and muggy at the moment (but we do need
the rain).

Thanks Jeff,
I will just leave walign in the task folder as is. This winalign.exe program
is not in the system; is this a necessary maintaince program?
It is like Snowy River here. Lake effect snows.
