I just bought a new computer with windows xp and would like to transfer my
files directly to it from windows me - is there an easy way to do this
without a wireless network?

Either use a usb pen drive to transfer files between the two PCs or
alternatively if both PCs have a network card join them using an RJ45
cross-over cable and enable file sharing on the Win Me box (Control Panel
| Network) and run the Network Setup Wizard on the box running XP.
