Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>networking (more info?)

I have a home network using a wireless router. The network consists of 2
Windows XP Pro, 2 Windows 98 SE, and recently added Macbook. The only
problem I have is that when I try to access the MACbook from either one of
the Windows 98 computers, I get “enter network password" "You must supply a
password to make this connection". There is no password, user combo that
works. Seems to be a well known problem. I've looked through the
MSknowledge base and Googled the problem. It seems that those experiencing
the problem were dealing with Windows 2000 or were having trouble getting
into and XP machine. I don't have any problem going from any of the
Windows machines to each other or TO the MACBook. The Mac goes to all my
Windows computers with no problem. I get the password request only when
trying go to the MAC.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what might the Windows 98 SE computers
need or be looking for on the MAC that is causing the problem.

TIA

This drives me nuts! I have only one Win98SE box and an iMac and always
get what you've described.

I _do_ have Windows Sharing turned on on the Mac.

I discovered that the Mac was trying to join a workgroup called
WORKGROUP, which is not the name of my PC's network. Since I changed
WORKGROUP to the right name, the Mac now shows up in Network
Neighborhood BUT it still demands the password.

Other direction is no problem. In Finder, I choose Connect to Server...
and the server is smb:<PC's IP>, then comes the 'choose a share' box and
then a Finder window opens with the share name in the left pane as
though it's a disc. I can even drag and drop out of it into Windows on
the Mac!

I asked my Mac meetup and they just said to always go from the Mac side.
But I'm gonna be WAY pleased when I solve this one. I hope someone has
the answer for us.
