Howdy, Just loaded up Win98SE onto a Gateway 400c, 64mb RAM, 400MHz
cpu, 4gb HDD. All I have on the computer is Windows and when I try to
load the video drivers (obtained from the Gateway support site) all I
get is a black screen that says "Information: Out of scan range" !!

What the heck is this? And how do I fix it? The drivers are the ATI
Rage 128 VR AGP which is onboard the motherboard. I haven't even
loaded the audio or network drivers yet. Before loading the drives I
had access to windows, although it was only through 16 colors and
standard VGA adapter.

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

The video adapter is driving the monitor at a scan frequency it can't
handle.

This is usually fixed by accessing the advanced settings option of the video
adapter driver and selecting a lower refresh rate. However if you can't get
it to work at all I'm not sure how you can manage that. Check whether there
are some options available in the install procedure to select a slower
default refresh rate.
