In my windows 2003 AD, I have several thousand users who have a Name (CN) of
"first initial last name", i.e. JSmith. I'd like to change it to match their
Display Name, (i.e. Smith, John), as most of my other users have. I tried
using LDIFDE and also ADSIEdit to do this, but I get an error while changing
the CN for user, "the attribute cannot be modified because it is owned by the
system". I also tried using DSMod, but i don't see this field as one that I
can change.

I can change this manually by Renaming the user. Doing this manually one at
a time is not an option for me. Is there a way to do a mass update to this
field?

I've had success with LDIFDE:

dn: CN=JSmith,CN=Users,DC=domain
changetype: modify
replace: displayName
displayName: Smith, John
-
changetype: modify
replace: sAMAccountName
sAMAccountName: Smith, John
-
changetype: modrdn
newrdn: CN=Smith, John
deleteoldrdn: 1

dn: CN=JDoe,CN=Users,DC=domain
etc.

Mike,

Have you looked at ADModify?

Mike,

What is the command line version of ADModify? Do you mean dsmod?

Glad that you figured it out.

It took some digging to find it, but the help file mentioned admodcmd.exe.
It wasn't included in the latest version of the tool, but i went back to
previously released versions and found it there. When I googled admodcmd.exe
i came up with this site:
