Having issues with Winipcfg

I am using a Compaq Armada 1700 laptop which runs Windows 98 Second Edition.
The last time I used this computer to connect to the Internet was some 2-3
months ago. Just last night I attempted to get on the Internet with it, but
I was unable too. My network PCMCIA card works, but cant connect. I tried
renewing and releasing all with winipcfg but the program fails to respond
after this.

I did a search on the web and some website said to add/remove dial up
networking, and re-install. I did this, but it did not fix my problem.

So I then called my ISP's tech support, and he reccommended that I remove my
Network Card drivers, and re-install from the floppy, and I did this, but my
problem remains.

So therefore I think I have a SERIOUS problem.

Does anyone have any solutions?

This procedure can fix strange problems with Windows 98 TCP/IP. Is
this what you tried?

1. Un-install Internet Connection Sharing (if installed).
2. Un-install Dial-Up Networking. Don't reboot.
3. Delete registry key HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. Re-install Dial-Up Networking. Reboot.
5. Re-install Internet Connection Sharing (if desired).

Interesting. Why reinstall DUN if it isn't being used? Is the installation
part of the fix, or are we assuming the OP wishes to retain DUN for when
high speed connection isn't available?

Hi Steve, I tried the network card in my Windows CE Palmtop and it also cant
get a ip address, so I think that I have a hardware problem. I reset the CE
device, and it usally works with the card. My card was under warranty and I
just mailed it back. Hopefully this will fix it.

The modem works, but the ethernet card does not.

I think I have a hardware failure as the card also failed in my Jornada 720
palmtop.

I have a wifi card, but no access to wifi locally.

The Jornada 720 also has a built in modem.

Hopefully TrendNet will send me another refurbished TE-CF100 card, as mine
is under warranty.

Perhaps your belief that the card works is a bit overdone. Otherwise the
program would not hang as you described.

Hi, Gary. I usually prefix this advice with: "Try this procedure to
repair TCP/IP, even if you don't use Dial-Up Networking". It's a
subset of the full procedure for removing and re-installing the TCP/IP
stack shown here:

I've found the subset to be effective in fixing many TCP/IP problems.

Yes the eeprom in the card could be corrupt or damaged, take care with
static control and if the co rejects your warranty claim why not set
a manual IP, as I infer you were wanting it set by the DHCP server etc ...?
