Once again looking for a good FLV player for 98. Seems as FLV technology
develops newer FLVs won't play. Yes I have VLC. Usually plays everything
but just don't care for it. Have Winamp too. Only plays SOME FLV's with
FFDSHOW. Would like a small standalone package.
Tried ANVSOFT v2 this morning and it would be OK were it not for
'calling home' every startup checking for newer version!
Any good software you can pass along? |

The no frills Riva FLV player, http://rivavx.de/index.php?id=422&L=3,
has worked on 98 for any flv's I've downloaded. Free and small, so
give it a try. |

Can't you set your firewall to block that particular software (or won't
it work at all unless it has called to mummy)? (I presume it doesn't
have a setting where you can turn off this "feature".)

Your presumption is right, no SW option to turn off! I don't use a firewall
but reply on a NAT router, HOSTS file and a few other tricks to keep things
at bay. Did consider a firewall may be the only way to stop it phoning home.
ZA on my W2K setup works well but generally like to keep software add-ons to
a minimum (better performance/stability/usability that way). And, seemed
easier to see if someone here had found something I did not!

Andy, tried that hoping it would work but no luck. Funny thing about the
HOSTS file, I've noticed MANY times that even though an entry exists, that
address is NOT blocked. For example, noticed when crusing eBay these AD
sites are there when the back button is pressed. Their address is in the
HOSTS file but still htey end up in IE or FF. I have no idea how they get
through! But let me conclude and say I believe the HOSTS file works because
many web pages come up with blank placemarks when their advertising would
have been. Entries in the HOSTS file blocks them.

If you see ads on a web page, you need to view the page source and look
carefully at each external link. You will see domains that aren't in
your hosts file. You can then add them manually when you find them. |

I just d/l'd it too,, no comment yet as no need to use, but nice to know
that something can decode flv's using 98.
(I need to make another back-up disk for all things that work with 98,
and this will be added.)

I replied to o/p that I too went and d/loaded it on your advice...
A question:; I noticed at that page you can d/load called WebPlayer for
adobe v10.... does that mean that 98 users can have adobe 10 too?
I have adobe version..... "whatever came with my instal of 98se", and
thats about it.
Have noticed a lot lately where unless I have a later/better version, I
can't d/load lots of things;; so, is Riva offering something that can
be used with 98 to overcome the adobe problem? (I hate adobe...
should be used to make bricks and thats all.)
thanks

Look into Foxit. Much less intrusive than Acrobat, and recent versions
did most of what's needed, and ran under '98; not sure if current
versions do, but oldversions should be findable if not.

Foxit is a PDF reader, not a FLV player.

Thats okay....
I need something to be able to read newer adobe stuff too;; same with a
'flash player', as I have noticed about 30% on web sites I visit dont
d/load;; I mean, the content of the page is unavailable due to
inferior flash player etc. (still not sure what to do about this.)

I love and use Zoom Player, http://www.inmatrix.com/
I bought the pay version so I could use it for DVDs.
ZP doesn't include all the codecs and splitters you need. I
remember I had to get the Halai splitter before .flv files
would play.
They may have simplified the install process since I got it
years ago.
I also like the program because it exposes some of the
internals on how the codecs, splitters, fit together. |

I don't know if this FLV player can meet your needs - http://www.playerdiy.com/
I test it on my own website, and it works well. |

just found this one, doesn't say it works on Win98, but I'm using it
on Win98FE
http://www.sothinkmedia.com/flv-player
only had to install some Adobe Flash Player [wasn't the latest,
either] which was lying dormant in my \download folder
and this thing runs very well, with FULL SCREEN, no margins even
