I recently downloaded a very large file only to be confronted with an error
to the effect that the file was too big and I would need NTFS. Does that
mean that I have to change to a later version of windows or can I keep
win98? The file in question is 4360 Mb.

Win98 does not support NTFS. Win2000 or winXP does.

The file size limit with FAT32 is about 4G. Your exceeding the max size.

My thanks for the info. I'll have to increase the memory of my computer
before I switch to Win2000 or winXP.

If you install win2k or XP you should have at least 256megs of RAM.
be sure to format the drive as NTFS ( or convert your fat32 drive after the
install if you do an upgrade)
