Greetings,

When I try to connect to a shared printer on my home wireless network I
get the following error message after a long timeout "Could not connect
to printer. The operation could not be completed."

My configuration is as follows:-

I have an ADSL Modem Connected to a Wireless Router
One PC (PC-A) is hard-wired into the router
Two PCs (PC-B & PC-C) are on 802.11g with WPA-PSK security
PC-C has two USB Printers connected and shared
All PCs can connect and share files

The problem is I get the above error when I try to set up a connection
to any of the shared printers on PC-C from PC-B but I can sucessfully
connect to any of the printers from PC-A which is hard-wired.

This problem has only occurred since I upgraded from an 802.11b access
point, using WEP, to the new 802.11g router using WPA. As the error
message only appears after a long timeout period I am assuming that the
client PC cannot connect to the host PC for some reason. I can find
nothing in the event logs on either machine.

I have rebuilt the host PC, Downloaded and installed the latest
wireless card and printer driver, and kept all Windows XP instances
updated and patched. I have tried fixed ip addresses, DHCP, Firewall
Off anf Firewall On, I have searched the Internet for an answer and
although I have found others with similar problems none of the
solutions have worked for me.

The weird thing is that the hard-wired client PC connects immediately
to the printer on the wireless host but the wireless client PC can't!

Has anyone experienced these problems and found a fix?

Greetings,

I appear to have resolved the issue :-\

The host machine has been playing-up with poor signal strength so I
decided to resurrect an old Realtek RTL8180 in an attmpt to get better
signal. The latest drivers seem to support WPA-PSK over 802.11b so I
reconfigured my DLink router to mixed mode (b & g), dropped in my
passphrase and away she went. Now I can print!

It looks like either the DLink router did not like the Netgear WG311v3
card or the card is faulty. I'll get a DLink 802.11g card sometime to
replace the Realtek but for now I'm one happy camper.
