blank monitor

Hi
I am trying to install win98SE on a gateway computer. My problem is,
when I get past the "gateway" screen, the screen goes blank. I can hear the
CD running, but the screen never comes back in. I am at a stand still and
have tried other video cards, different cords, etc...but still to no avail!
Am I missing somthing I am suppose to do here? thanks for your time and ANY
help!!

Is the CD you are using a self booting one? If so, do you have the CDRom
set as the first boot device in the BIOS?

I would have to say no its not self booting, but I am not sure because I
cannot see what it does because of the screen...I also tried to do an install
with a winXP CD, which I do know is selfbooting, but the screen is still
blank...and yes, it is set in the bios to boot off of the CD-ROM...

With the W98SE disk, are you using a floppy boot disk to install? If so,
the floppy drive has to be set as the first boot device in the BIOS. When
the initial screen is done, the floppy should start up and there should be
white printing on a black screen.

Since you have changed video cards, have you tried another monitor (just to
be sure)?

yep, I have tried 3 other monitors, 2 other cards. I will go and try changing
the boot sequience to floopy first. could a drive for the monitor have been
taken out by some odd chance. when I got the computer, it had been freshly
"fdisked",(the guy told me he did that), he didnt say anything about a
problem...but he fdisked and basically brought it to me after...but i will
give this a try and I will post to let ya know..thanks

The first part of the install doesn't use drivers and doesn't rely on
anything being already on the hard drive, so if I am understanding the
description of the problem correctly it must be either a hardware fault or
hardware configuration problem.

If you boot with an ordinary DOS boot floppy, can you get the DOS prompt?

I will give it a try and see what happens.what kind of hardware config
problem would I be looking for? and where? just so I can try another avenue
right away. along with trying to boot with a DOS floppy that is...thanks

An example of a configuration problem would be having the monitor connected
to the wrong video port, which is getting turned off after the initial
start-up display.

I went to gateway tech too have a look-see and in reading came across this

A:
Advanced Power Management

The BIOS Setup Utility supports Advanced Power Management (APM) and standby
mode. The energy-saving standby mode is initiated in the following ways:

Time-out period specified in the BIOS Setup Utility
Suspend/resume switch connected to the front panel sleep connector
From the operating system, such as the Suspend menu item in Windows® 95

In standby mode, the motherboard reduces power consumption by using SMM
capabilities. Reducing power to or turning off Video Electronics Standards
Association (VESA) Display Power Management Signaling (DPMS)-compliant
monitors and spinning down hard disks are examples of this.
The BIOS enables APM by default, but the operating system must support an
APM driver for the power-management features to work.
