removed meaning what: crash, format etc.?

WinME is not hardware, it is 'software' and, depending on the circumstances
in your case, you may very well be able to 'recover' from it.

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows
ME boot disk. Start the computer in question with the boot disk, then type "c:\windows\options\install\setup" and press "Enter". If this doesn't help
or can't be done, please repost with more information, including whether or
not you have a Windows CD and what happens when you try to start the
computer in question.

I suppose it depends on exactly how it's disappeared. If files have been deleted, it could be a problem.
Have you got a startup disc for it ? There may be files on there which can help you recover the operating system. If not, there are places on the internet which seem to offer downloads of a bootable floppy for ME amongst others. |

Try a linux live cd like u-lite, to see if you can save your files, and
attempt a reinstall.
http://u-lite.org
Boot with the live cd. Open pcmanfm filemanager. Click your hard drive
icon to mount it. Then open the web browser kazekahase, and try to upload
your most important files, like doc.text and mp3 files to an online
storage site like freshdownload, or megaupload.
Perhaps there is an install partition, or directory with me cab files in
it. If there is? You are in luck. Google windows me bootdisk, download,
and burn it to cd or write one to floppy. There is a cd burner under
appliations/audio and video. Google instructions for writing a floppy
disk in linux, if that is what you need. I haven't done it in a while.
Then reboot, with the new boot disk you have made, and move to the install
directory or partition, and follow the setup procedure. The change disk
command is a: for floppy c: for hardisk d: generally cd/dvd rom e:
generally cd/dvd rom. The list contents of directory command is dir/e.
The change directory command is cd directory name. If you cannot boot with
the cd or floppy perhaps you need to look at the boot order in your bios.
If you do not have an install directory or partition, you can purchase
windows me from ebay, though it is still quit costly. You can also
install u-lite from the live cd. It works well for that era of computer,
and unlike me, is supported. It is also free of charge, and has features
most people need, and use.

(Hmm.. it looks like my newsserver don't get all newsposts...
I don't see the start-message here, only two Re:-posts ?)

yes, tell us what is happening now when you start your computer!
are there any error messages or anything?

write down what you see when the computer stops
or take a photo and put it at a site like http://bayimg.com/ so we can see
It can be lot of different things, from verry easy fix
in bios settings, to harddisk crash
There was a similiar question asked here a month ago,
you can probably have use for that too, especially Mart's
answer looks good
If the worst thing have happened and your harddisk is crashed
(no it is probably not what have happened) and you can't
find the installation-cd to use when installing WinME on
your new harddisk, then you can certainly fairly easy find a
cd image to download searching with Google or thepiratebay after
windowsME download iso
(And *IF* you have to reinstall, remember to get all the bugfixes
made for WinME afterwards. Note that some of these updates are
are made after microsoft stopped fixing bugs for winME.) |

This is a microsoft hosted support newsgroup, so watch out about telling
people to download from piratebay. That isn't legal, and if the person
does it, and gets caught they can get into trouble.

This is a microsoft hosted support newsgroup, so watch out about telling
people to download from piratebay. Microsoft employees monitor it. That
isn't legal, and if the person does it, and gets caught they can get into
trouble.

How are you contacting the Newsgroup? On another computer? Using a dual boot
on the ME unit? I'm trying to figure out how you know you don't have the ME
OS unless you're just missing some files in which case we can help. A
reinstall can be done of the OS if you have the disc. Trying the boot disc
could work (floppy inserted into A also. Finally your AV software might
have created a rescue set in case a virus is the problem. We need more info!
