Post subject: XP to win98 ?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>networking (more info?)

I make use of my office's network to build a peer-to-peer network between 2
pcs: one running windows 98, one running XP (professioal, service pack 2).
The office computers are used mainly for internet access.

NetBios is enabled over TCPIP, printer and file-sharing protocol installed
on these 2 pcs. Simple file access is disabled; user accounts and passwords
are created on both machines. A Guest account is created on the wndows 98
machine with a password. Two folders are shared with full-access password.

When user logons into the windows 98, it can see and access the shared
folders on the XP machine.

Problem
-------
The XP machine can see the shared folders on the windows 98 machine, but
whenever the folders are accessed, a connect-to windows pops up; the user is
set to Win98pc\Guest (assuming Win98pc is the name of pc), and a box for
password. The log-in name on XP is not guest.

The user name is grayed, ie cannot be changed. After entering the password,
the next identical pop-up appears; and the process repeats, until Cancel
button is clicked; ie folder cannot be accessed.

Any idea ?

Thanks.
