I can look at the message preview ok when the panel is to the right of the
folder but when I want the message preview to appear below the folder, the
preview takes up the whole area and I cannot resize it to see the folder
entries.

TIA

Are you changing it via View | Layout? Check everything except *Beside
Messages*.

At this point, you can use the cursor to resize the frame when it turns into
the double arrow.

When it is resized the way you want, using the toolbar, right click and
close all other options that have been minimized. When nothing is left
except the window you are in, select File and depending on your options,
either Exit, or Close. Windows should remember the change now.

Bruce
Thanks for the reply.
I have done that but do not get the resize icon to perform the resize.

There is no icon. You have to place the cursor where you want to do the
stretch and watch for it to turn into a double arrow, and then move the
section.

I may be misinterpreting you, so perhaps this may help.

Right click on the minimized message on the Taskbar and select Move. Now use
the arrow keys to get it in the screen. Close all other windows except this
one and use the cursor to drag the message to full screen size. File | Exit,
and Windows will remember the size when you open it again.

The problem is no matter where I put the pointer, the double arrow does not
appear. I have done this before with no poblem. I have had this problem
with some applications (Crystal Reports) and it required a registry change
to a key whic designated the size of the field. It was set to 0 so I had to
change it to a numbe.
Sorry I am such a pest.

Thanks again

I don't know about that registry key. Create a new identity and test it. If
that works, you can import your folders and address book into the new
identity and delete the old.

It is not uncommon for an identity to become damaged, especially the default
Main Identity.

Bruce
I finally got it to work. The PC belongs to my in-laws. They had every
message sent since 2003 in their inbox. I moved them out to a folder and
after following your original instructions, I got the double arrow and
everything is fine.
Thanks for not giving up on me!

Glad you got it going. I never give up, but I do bang my head against the
wall a lot. <g>

For the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.
