I have a Compaq Presario running Windows 95 OS, and I would like to run a
wired or wireless connection using my Dell PC, running XP professional for
file sharing, printer sharing and internet sharing. How possible is this and
what devises will I need. Both computers have cards for networking; I have a
broadband connection to the internet. Will you please explain this process
to me. I have gathered some information, but I feel something is missing.
My internet provider explained that I would need a router. I have viewed
routers that seem to have many features that could support both computers. I
would like a wireless, but can be satisfied with a wired network for a home
workgroup.

I think you will have to settle for a wired connection if you want to
connect a W95 machine - finding a wireless card for the laptop that supports
W95 is probably going to be impossible.

You don't absolutely need a router, but it is the best way to go. The router
will connect to your modem, and then both PCs will connect to the router.

There's not much point in explaining the process here as it is already very
well documented in many places, and in any case it will vary slightly
depending on which router you select. To get an idea of what's involved, go
to the router manufacturer's www page and download the installation manual.
Work through the installation procedure to see what's involved.

For instance, all the routers listed here have downloadable installation
manuals.

The older ones will refer to W95.

I recommend a wired or wireless router to share your broadband
connection between both computers. Run the Network Setup Wizard on
Windows XP. If the Wizard detects the router's shared Internet
connection, tell it to use that. Otherwise, tell the Wizard that the
computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway.

The Wizard will tell you to run it on the other computer. However,
the Wizard won't run on Windows 95. Make the network settings on
Windows 95 manually. Go to Control Panel | Network and:

1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:

TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

2. Remove these network components if they're present:

IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks

3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

To connect Windows 95 to a wireless network, get a wireless gaming
adapter (available from Netgear, D-Link, Linksys, etc).

Connect the wireless gaming adapter to a wired Ethernet port on
Windows 95, then follow the wireless gaming adapter's instructions to
program it with the wireless settings for your network.

Jeff Richards,
I want to first Thank you for your response, and secondly for such
insightful suggestions. I too thought a wired network would work best with
Win95 for many reasons, age being the first. I will review the instruction
manuals, as you are correct. I can get a better understanding of want is
needed. Netgear is one router I considered. Again, thanks.
