Unused for some months, Windows Media Player no longer
plays WMV files. (Perhaps some DLLs were overwritten when
I updated IrfanView.) MS help site offers no help. What is the
best way to reinstal WMP for Win98SE ?

Check your file associations BEFORE thinking about re-installing.
Depending upon what you installed in IRFANView, you may have changed several
associations.

Thanks but this was already done, i.e. WMV reassigned to WMP,

*** Might be a good idea to monitor ALL upgrades to programs with Total
Uninstall, InControl, or some other monitoring program. Most developers
aren't really testing for 9X compatibility any more. Might save future
issues/problems. ***

Back to your original question.

Control Panel> Add/Remove> Windows media player system update (series 9) >
remove
Start your monitoring program
Re-install the player... save the monitor log
Install the WMP update(s) while monitoring, save the log.
Check both WMP and IrfanView for proper functioning.
If necessary, re-install whatever update you did in IrfanView while
monitoring. Compare the logs for cross-file usage. Place whatever file [dll]
was over-written into WMP folder. [extract it from the installer or update,
your log will advise where it came from and where it was originally placed]

What do you mean by "no longer plays"? Is there an error or does it
display incorrectly or at the wrong speed, or is it that when you
double-click WMV files WMP does not start?

WMP v.9 no longer plays files ot types WMV, WAV, Midi or MP3.

Error message is uniformly "Class Not Registered."
Web Help button produces via MS "Additional information
is not currently available for this error."

In my WMP v.9's "Windows Media Player Error Center", there is no mention
of that particular error at all, nor of its number 80040154. However,
Google has about 42,300,000 hits for it...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Class+Not+Registered&btnG=Google+...rch&aq=

Do you have Quartz.dll in C:\Windows\System...?...

QUARTZ.DLL
Desc: DirectShow Runtime.
Loc: C:\Windows\System
Size: 1,098,752 bytes
Mod: Friday, August 05, 2005 03:04:50 PM
Ver: 6.05.1.907

If not, get it out of a .cab maybe with SFC. However, that will be an
older & smaller one (Win98SE)...

Cabinet WIN98_39.CAB
04-23-1999 10:22:00p A--- 770,048 quartz.dll

That sounds like a DirectX file. If you've already got it, try
re-registering it...

........Quote....................

quartz.dll

In the end, you should receive a message saying that your file was
succesfully installed.

Goto to the link below for a full expplanation:
http://www.free-codecs.com/guides/How_to_fix_Class_not_registered_or_8...0154_er

It worked for me on the first try
Now my mp3’s and video files play with no problem

I hope it works for you
