Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct group, if not please let me know which group
I should be posting too.
Network was slow, watched Wireshark for a while, and felt like there was/is
a high number of broadcast, Who has 192.168.x.x Tell 192.168.x.x (source.)
Have one domain with three WINS servers. Found many, if not all of the
broadcasts were asking for PC's which the primary WINS did not have, but one
of the secondary's did. I think there was (or is) a problem with
replication, and I attempted to ensure primary was partners with both
secondary's. I don't the the primary was replicating with the secondary in
the above example, but would have thought I set it correctly now.
I can't tell if it is replicating or not. When I open WINS, and click on
the primary, then click on "Show Only Mappings from Selected Owner", I don't
see a particular IP/Name. But if I click on "Show All Mappings" the IP/Name
in question is show.
I then fired up Wireshark again, and found a PC which is show in the
secondary WINS, but not in the Primary (When Show Only Mappings...) Then
in a command box typed \\PCName (with the name of a real PC), I saw the
Primary WINS broadcast a request for who has the IP, tell me (like above),
and then the share on \\PCName opened. And the WINS still wasn't updated
with the IP/PCName.
I don't know if the primary WINS is suppsoed to ask a secondary WINS, or
just do a broadcast. I would have thought since the Secondary WINS does
have a mapping, the mapping should have been replicated to the Primary, but
it appears that isn't happening.
I tried changing the secondary WINS Version ID to a number higher than any
number if the Secondary, but I admit I was guessing...highest number was
A4BF, so I went with A4CF and it's now at A4DE. I then stopped and
restarted both WINS involved, and still seeing the same broadcasts mentioned
above.
Suggestions?
I have spent time searching for info, but haven't found anything on hex
numbering, or any other clues as to what I am screwing up. I could really
use some help.
Yes, we are rolling out Server 2003 boxes to stand next to each NT4 server,
should be boxes side by side within a month. Then data transfer, and
sometime after that, shutdown the NT4 servers. Hooray, I think.
Thanks,
Jeff
