So let me start by saying that I have done this a few other times without a
hitch.
The computer I am upgrading had nothing on it other thant the Win. 98 os. My
friend asked me to help upgrade to XP.
I boot off of the XP Pro disc. It takes me through the usual prompts. I
delete the partition (i think this is where i went wrong).
It then asks if I want to delete everything on the HD and I select yes. It
started to go through the upgrade process.........
Here is where the problem comes.........Installation CD cannot be detected.
Try again or exit set up....save the XP intallation file on your hard drive
and load from there.......
When I reboot there is no OS to save installation files to...any thoughts |

If you're upgrading, you don't want to erase the existing OS, which is what
you did when you deleted the partition. Only way to install now is to have
the original WIn98 installation media on hand to show to XP's Setup.
In order to copy anything to the hard drive, you'll have to first create a
new partition and format it, though I don't think that will help.
In any case, this is definitely no longer a Win98 problem, it's an XP
problem, and you should be posting to an XP Setup newsgroup.

I'd suggest getting a DOS boot floppy with CD support. Then use FDISK to
create a FAT32 partition.
Once done, you can start the setup by running winnt.exe in the i386 folder
of the CD. Or, just reboot from the CD. |

When Upgrading to Windows XP Pro or Home from Win98 you MUST do a clean
install by booting from the cd-rom. You are doing it correctly. Keep on
truckin'.

Not sure about that one. You can run the installer without booting from the
CD by copying the files to the HDD and then running winnt32.exe from the
I386 folder. I *SUSPECT* that the installer will then reboot and run the
installation program from that location automatically, but I'm probably
wrong on that one.
Regardless, a "clean install" implies reformatting the HDD first, and that
is absolutely not true for an Upgrade from 9x to XP. It's one option, yes,
but you can also have it set up a dual-boot (both from the same partition),
or have it replace the existing %windir% and still retain all (or most) apps
and all personal data.
