I know there is a way to do it.

Somehow I managed to lock all desktop and folder icons. I cannot drag
them into any configuration other than those allowed in the menus such
as by name, date, etc.

They are locked where they are on the left side.

I've clicked everywhere and cannot seem to find a way to undo this so
I can re-arrange my desktop or my file folders the way I want it.

What is the process for this stupid and forgetful person?

Also, I recently installed "Avast", a free anti-virus that will work
on Win95. Any cance that this might be the culprit? Actually Avast
was working OK for a couple of days and I was able to drag everything
before the recent set of circumstances.

Thanks in advance.

E-mail responses welcome but also post here for others, please.

[crossposting removed]

Rightclick the desktop, select Arrange Icons and uncheck AutoArrange

Did that. Didn't help.

I shut off the anti-virus in case that is keeping me from moving stuff
(should not, because all was working and movable well over an hour
ago) just in case to no avail.

It seems that clicking on arranging by date, size, etc works fine as
well as auto-arrange, but clicking auto-arrange to off (no check mark)
is not helping.

I even unchecked that and did a cold reboot.

Any other ideas?

Windows screwed up maybe?

I did have an error when changing the display settings earlier today
and had to close Windows and got a blue-screen error that said to
click any key to continue but that did not work. I hit the power
button and Windows came up in safe mode. All appeared well so I
rebooted and everything came up OK in full mode.

I cannot find anything in the display settings that will cause this to
remain fixed. Nothing else in any control panel anywhere.

Anything in a log file that has to be rebuilt? A cache someplace?

Or, (gulp...) the registry?

Replying to self here.

I got it!

I have Hawkeye installed. Its a 3rd party display utility. I shut
that down and rebooted and that seems to have fixed it.

Thanks Alan. Glad to know there are still !95 people out there
willing to assist.

We have just installed an XP here (nice machine) but 5the old 95 work
house still has file son it we need. I'm in the process of moving the
files over to the XP now. The 95 will still be used for many things
and will be my son's main system when the XP is not in use.

I also have an older Mac here on the house network. We seem to just
grab what ever system is available for browsing or IMing.
