Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>performance (more info?)

I do not have any usb unit connected to my computer, but each time I boot up, I
get the message that the system has found usb serial bus. I don\t know what to
look for, but anyway, I go through the wizard and ask for it to search, and it
comes back that it has found nothing. Then i try to let it look at
Win/options/cabs and nothing there. I even used my original cd installation of
win98. I do find a usb folder, thinking that is what its looking for and then
I get amessage that windows was unable to find driver for this device. I'm
still trying to figure out..what device are they talking about. I do have a usb
printer..but that is working fine. I do have a usb ati tuner, and suspect that
it maybe referring to that unit, so i put in the cd installaion disk and chose
usb, and still get the message that it cannot find driver for this unit. Now i
can't even use this tuner. Any clues?

I think you should make up your mind. See question marked sentences and
compare information provided.

Solution. This old post is only relevant now to people using older software on hardware supported by Windows 98. Microsoft include USB drivers in 98SE/ME for all 8 major makers of USB chips (Open HCI) and both south bridge chipsets (Universal HCI) meaning USB 1.0 but nothing for USB 2.0 (Enhanced HCI). This hardware in device manager with a yellow ? when one or more USB devices are already included and working properly can only mean you need the faster USB 2.0 drivers. Example, the Intel 845 chipset is very common and will have this problem with 98SE, go to their website and search for "USB 2.0 drivers windows 98", you should quickly find the link to USB2098me.exe or similar. Download and run this, restart computer and device manager should have a new entry for both an EHCI controller and a USB 2.0 hub. Problem solved. Will
