I have a problem opening attachments of a particular
extension - .dst. All others work fine. I get the
message in a box titled "ThumbScb error" and the message
with a warning sign reads "Error! System cannot read
stitch data file". The only option available is an OK
box. If I hit the OK box 10-15 times, the email will
open and I can save the attachments.
This is not the security flag error. As I said, every
other attachment works fine.
I think for some reason outlook is trying to open and run
the attachment. I am puzzled, however, because it only
happens with files of the .dst extension.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Edward |

What software is the sender using to make these attachments and is there a
viewer for them?
Could it be related to this?

These are not image files. They are actually
instructions for an embroidery machine. I had been
downlowding using my modem until yesterday when I
installed a new DSL connection, and now I cant open the
files.
Your link makes me think if somewhere Windows, or
Explorer think that these are images and is trying to
show a thumbnail.....It is a stretch but the article you
provided is really over my head.
Any other ideas....

Well the system takes it's cue from a list of known "Extensions" you can
find by opening a folder on the desktop and going tools>folder options>file
types.
For example .txt will be listed and you'll see it opens with "Notepad" by
default unless you installed something else to do the job.
Similarly if you click on something with a .jpg extension your chosen
picture viewer should be listed to open it, although numerous things can
such as IE itself.
If these come as visible attachments you can right click on them and "Save
as" usually, I don;t know why anything would "Try" to open them unless right
clicked on or actually inserted into the message at the sending end somehow.
Has the sender tried sending mail to you in plain text format instead of
rich text format or have I missed something here (says he awaiting someone
jumping in and saying so). I have not seen anything use the .dst extension,
certainly the GFX packages I have haven't heard of it.
Are these produced by some sort of pattern making software? I mean if it's
instructions for a machine it will likely be numeric and pretty
incomprehensible anyway. You could try making a copy and instead of .dst
change the extension to .txt and see what Notepad makes of it.
Does the machine in question have a floppy drive? Is that the idea?

Search your whole hard drive for a file named ThumbScb.dll
Rename it to ThumbScb.dll.old
Remember what you did in case something doesn't work right and you want to rename back to its original name in the future.
