I have a number of 98SE machines on which I have removed this icon from the
systray, although I don't recall how I did it.

Now I've reinstalled 98SE on a laptop (where the systray is quite crowded), and
I want to again remove this icon. I never use Task Scheduler.

Any suggestions how to remove it?

First, remove Windows Critical Update Notifications (in Add/Remove
programs).

Then open Task Scheduler, select Advanced and then Stop Using Task
Scheduler. Then do Run / Regedit and delete the following key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices]
Value Name: SchedulingAgent Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value) Data:
mstask.exe
