On a new PC I am seeing boxes with a red x in them, is this because I have
not got an updated Java release? If so how do I get it?

TIA

Where does it say "not"?

Don't add your own interpretations that do not mean what they say is
"recommended".

From the Sun Java link you provided:

"It is recommended that you keep older versions of the JRE on your system. "

What Frank & David said: Yes, uninstall all of them and then delete
C:\Program File\Java <= this folder before installing JRE v1.5.0_7.

Which may be used *if* you are using a Java Application that is tied to a specific version
of Sun Java.

The new version has still not been posted on their download page, nor via
the live update.
Someone posted the direct link to the new version in one of these newsgroups
earlier, and that's how I downloaded mine. Sorry, but I no longer have the
link.

I had no problem getting it from their download page, and that was two
hours ago, and I just checked now and it is still there.

I just did an online installation of version 7. No problems whatsoever.

I decided not to remove version 6 before the installation and ended up with two entries in Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs), one for the old version 6 (119 mb) and one for the new version 7 (120 mb)

Removed old version 6 and now has only one entry for version 7. Everything works flawlessly.

Warning! The online install process gives you the choice of installing Google Toolbar and Google Desktop. They have the Google Toolbar checked, so be sure to remove the checkmark, if you don't want the Google Toolbar installed.

As does the offline install. Always choose the Custom Install option when
installing /anything/!

Not quite!! It says "There might be some applications or applets
written and tested against a specific version of the JRE." Only under
these circumstances you need not remove the older onces. It also says:

"If you are running low on disk space, you can uninstall older versions
of the JRE."

What is MORE important is the version relative to actively exploited vulnerabilities and
Sun's Feb. 7, 06 bulletin # 102171 "Security Vulnerabilities in the Java Runtime Environment
may Allow an Untrusted Applet to Elevate its Privileges"...

The Vundo Trojan is one example of of malware that exploits the above vulnerability.

"Note: It is recommended that affected versions be removed from your system. For more
information, please see the installation notes on the respective java.sun.com download
pages."
