| Sun Java has released update 7.
Can that update be installed on top of the old version 6, or does that version have to be removed first?

1. Uninstall all Sun Java JRE runtimes you find in Add/Remove Programs.
2. Delete C:\Program Files\Java <= this folder. Do NOT delete C:\Program
Files\JavaVM <= this folder, if found.
3. Right-click on the link to download v1.5.0_7 > Save the download to your
desktop > Close all browser windows > Install.

Agreed.
I am curious as I cannot find "Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update
7" anywhere.

Unless Sun has gone insane - it will update just like all the previous ones
and will update your current version happily.
However - since Sun's download page is down for maintenance:
"Notice: We're Offline for System Upgrades"
It is difficult to confirm.
Make a system restore point, install the update, test it. Works - report
back and let us know - since the rest of us have to wait for the download to
become available.

"Update" is a relative term. All the Sun Java "updates" I have installed
left the old version on the disk. It had to be removed using Add/Remove
programs. Not much of an "update" if you ask me. But, typical of Sun - Ah,
I remember those days supporting Solaris, and SunOS before that. Typical.
You'd think they would have learned something about user friendliness after
all these years LOL.

Same here. I routinely uninstall the older version before installing the
newer one.

PA Bear, appreciate your post regarding Java updates, but I need some
additional help. In my installed program list in Control Panel, I have three
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Updates, 2,4 and 6. Also, I have two Java 2
Runtime Environments, SE v1.42_03 and _06. Am I to remove all of these, just
the three J2SE entries, or just the Java 2 Runtime Environment entries?
TIA

I have java 1.5.0_06-b05. When I open the java control panel and try to
update, I get the message that I have the latest version of java. Do I have
to go to the jave site to update?

I would be surprised to learn that Sun did not include that information on

Sun says to *not* remove previous versions:

Well, they actually recommend you keep the older version..
They do not state that "You should not remove it" <- only that "It is
recommended that you keep older versions of the JRE on your system."
They even state:
"If you are running low on disk space, you can uninstall older versions of
the JRE. To remove older versions of JRE, go to Windows Java Runtime
Environment uninstallation instructions page. <
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010800.xml >"
On the page you gave.
After all - there are many people who start with a clean system and have
only the last version - because that is what they downloaded.
As it seems the installer is smart enough to "update" previous versions -
but not to remove the entries in the Add/Remove programs control panel.
However - I usually do not remove the older version - only install the
latest.
