Anyone got any ideas of where else I can look to make a pair of speakers
attached to a WinME machine work <g>

The speakers that were in use on the machine no longer work (guinea pig
chewed the connecting wire) I had a set of speakers that came with Johns
machine that we don't use as our Monitors have speakers built in.

Connected these speakers but only get very faint sound, I've been through
all the settings I can think of and they are all turned up to full volume,
so can anyone think of anywhere else that might help.

Did you download the "dreaded drivers" for the different speakers?? Tis
a thought, grin.

Just guessing here. Faint sound would mean the speakers are connected to
Line Out and they need an amplified Speaker Out. Ideally you have four
sound connections Line In, Line Out, Speaker Out, Mic In. If you have no
Speaker Out you will have to use speakers that have an amplifier, powered by
a connection to a 120v outlet.

I remember hearing that if you hold a guinea pig up by the tail, it's
eyes will fall out!

Is it true?

Joanie,
My first suspicion would coincide with what John said. I'm betting
you had to plug your old speakers into a power outlet and these new ones
don't have that. The easiest thing to do would be to simply splice the
chewed wires back together. A little solder and some heat shrink tubing or
tape and you will be back in business!

You know John? John Archer? Captain of the Starship Enterprise?

I think they got the answer in this thread, that speakers need power. If
your board in your PC is not supplying power, you need speakers with an AC
adapter. If you have an old MB with a sound port with no power, and
speakers with no AC plug, you either need to get a sound card or new
speakers. Speakers are cheap. I only paid $40 for decent magnetically
shielded ones about 15 years ago. Surely you can find some that work now
around $10 at WalMart or Radio Shack.

I think you could be right about this John, the old speakers plugged into
the electricity socket and the computer and one of them have a volume
control and a socket which I think was for headphones. The speakers we are
trying to use are just ones that came with Johns eMachine which aren't
needed as his LCD monitor has speakers built in.

There is only 3 places to connect on the back of Kelly's machine so
obviously there is no amplified Speaker Out Sad mind you there are only 3
places on John's machine but they must be amplified.

Oh well she'll just have to live with no sound unless she buys herself
some new speakers which she wont do as she wants to have a laptop in the
near future, and she knows I wont spend any more money on that machine of
hers <g>

Thanks for the help John.

You're right Heirloom, see my answer to John.
John did try to splice but said the wires were too thin so gave up and
threw them away. He's got no patience <g> plus I don't think we have a
solder iron.

Yes I know John, I'm married to him.<g>

You probably could get cheap speakers but as I don't intend spending
anymore on that particular machine it doesn't matter and I don't have a
Walmart or Radio Shack where I live anyway.

WalMart and Radio Shack are everywhere here. I forgot, you're in Canada?
They might have something similar there, or you could find cheap ones on the
internet. Internet is often just a little more expensive if you have
shipping charges. +/- $10USD is worth it if you plan on keeping the old PC,
or keeping the speakers to use with a new PC you may be buying soon to
replace it. If you're getting a new package deal PC soon, chances are it
comes with speakers whether you want them or not, and it won't matter anyway
if you only want one set.

<lol> Wrong again Eric, I'm in the UK, it's Heather who is in Canada.

The machine in question is my old WinME machine which I passed over to my
daughter to use while she still lives at home and she knows that if she
wants a new one or anything for that machine she has to buy it herself <g>

Same point. I don't know if either WalMart or Radio Shack are in either
Canada or the UK, but either way you're much more likely to live near one in
the US.

What is the official name of your little country? United Kingdom, Britain,
Great Britain, or England?

I imagine you could live without sound. Many office PCs have no speakers,
but for personal use most people need speakers for something.
Most daughters also have $10USD to spare, though she may need help finding
the speakers to purchase.

Sigh......and you actually get ticked off if we Canadians tell Americans
they know dick all about Canada??

I have both a WalMart (ptui) and a few Radio Shacks (now called "the
Source") within a 10 minute drive from my home in the outer boonies of
Toronto. Also have a lot of Best Buys too. American Eagle, Old Navy,
the list is endless.

We can and do speak English, very few of us are bilingual.....we are not
at war with Quebec......and we don't wear snowshoes in July. Just to
cover a few misconceptions I have run across.

All of the above is *tongue in cheek*, so don't go all ballistic on me
(as usual). Must remember to put some sort of smilies on my posts.

Ha! I've never left my country.
The closest I will likely get to seeing Canada in person is when I take my
vacation to Niagara Falls.

I figure there are quite a few WalMarts in Canada, but probably not as many
as in the US.
I know many big companies that are in the US are also in Canada. I used to
work for Foot Locker. They have stores up there as well as a corporate
office, so I have spoken with a Canadian on the phone and I know they really
do often end sentences with "eh?".

I figure the English/French speakers in Canada are probably about as many
English/Spanish speakers in America.
Some here speak only Spanish, quite a few speak both, and most of us speak
only English.
I had some foreign languages in high school but I don't remember much.

Every shot I recall seeing of Canada on TV/movies has snow on the ground. I
imagine they get about as much snow as Russia (not year round).

I don't know about any war up there, but I have heard something about parts
of Canada rebelling against England.
