| My sound device has disappeared - where do I look for it in my PC? is it
possible to get it back?
It is a real pain not being able to hear anything.

What do you mean it's disappeared? What's disappeared? Where have you looked
for it thus far? The tray icon? In Multimedia in the Control Panel? In
Device Manager?
Your message below gives no clue as to what level your own computer
knowledge is, and we need to know where you are in your diagnosis in more
detail. That's why I ask for clarification.

I RUN WINDOWS 98 - I have looked everywhere for the sound device but it isn't
so simple when I have no idea of its "name" or description. The sound was
working fine until I used Registry Fix and Sys Mechanic (I think) but now
hear nothing. Maybe I deleted something that I should not have. Don' know
the icon for it either - it was installed when I bought the comp.

OK. That's a good start.
1. Registry tools such as the ones you mention usually have Undo
capabilities. You should carefully review the documentation for those tools
to discover how to Undo, starting with Help.
2. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Multimedia. I forget the exact name,
but in one or more places within that applet, you should see your sound
device listed, instead of "None Selected". What do you see?
3. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop. Click on Properties.
Click on the Device Manager tab. Look in the Sound section. What do you see?

my computer->properties->hardware->device manager
and you will see yellow "?", that's your problem. To click on it. And there are some buttons on the top of the window. To click on "update driver". A dialog box will appear, computer will ask u a question, choose "yes, this time only."->next
Another question, choose "install from a list or specific location (advanced)->next
