Hi,
When trying to setup Win95 on a Dell 8200 the files seem to be copied OK,
but when setup restarts the computer I get a protection error when the ISO
begins to start and the computer shuts down.
It seems I vaguely remember this protection error, but it has been awhile.
Does anyone have any idea what is causing this and a way to correct it.
Thanks,
Norm |

What is the actual content of the error message? That may provide
some additional clues.
One possibility is the size of the hard drive. Windows 95 cannot use
a hard drive larger than 32 gb.
Good luck

Bill, that site is interesting, but not the type error I am getting. At
least I don't think so.
I am not sure I remember the exact error, but there is no number. It said
While Initializing IOS Windows had a Protection error Reboot your computer.
Rebooting takes you to the safe mode, which gives you the same error. I
tried command line booting, but everything else loads fine and then I get
the same error.
The hard drive is bigger than 32 gb, but Windows 95 is on a 3 gb partition.
Can it still see the whole hard drive? If so that may be the problem.

Thanks Ben,
I don't have the AMD processor but will try the patch on Win95 and see if it
helps.

As far as I am aware it is the partition size and not the overall size
of the drive that is the limiting factor with Windows 95. So if you
have a 3 gb partition for Windows 95 then that should not be the cause
of your problems.
Good luck

I tried the update executable, but I am unable to start Win95 even in the
safe mode to use it and it will not run from DOS.
Does anyone know where I can download the following files, as I can replace
them manually from another operating system.

Open the executable with WinZip and extract the files to a floppy.
Then start the problem computer in DOS, insert the floppy and
copy the files as follows:
All versions
ESDI_506.PDR c:\windows\system\iosubsys
SCSIPORT.PDR c:\windows\system\iosubsys
Windows 95 OSR2 and later
HSFLOP.PDR c:\windows\system\iosubsys
CDFS.VXD c:\windows\system\iosubsys

VFBACKUP.VXD c:\windows\system\vmm32
Windows 95 OSR 2.1 and later

I was able to get the files I needed by installing Win95 into a Virtual
drive and after updating it there I copied the files I needed into the
partition on my hard drive.
I am happy to report that Win95 is now running on my hard drive. All I have
to do now is find some drivers that will work with my system and Win95.
Thanks to everyone for all the help, I really appreciate it.
