I use Outlook Express 6.0 under XP on both my desktop and laptop computers.
Both have DSL connections. But on my laptop when I receive messages from
two different people in one particular organization (and domain name) the
text of the message is blank. This has happened on several occasions. As
far as I can tell the settings on both of my computer are identical, but for
some reason something is erasing the message when I try to use my laptop.
I have not had this problem with any other domain and as far as I can tell
no one
else who receives these messages has a problem (and I don't when I am home
using my desktop!) I also use McAfee security applications on both
computers, if that makes any difference. Anyone have any thoughts on this
strange problem?

I would look to McAfee as a possible source. McAfee and Norton products play
havoc with OE, especially their more *sophisticated* programs.

Yes, I suspected McAfee and turned off the spam filter (no difference), and
I have McAfee on my home computer without it causing this problem. I have
now discovered that it is somehow related to my email account. My domain
(pacbell.net) is tied to my yahoo account (my ISP is SBC Yahoo). Messages
come into yahoo first and then get moved to my pacbell email account. The
problem seems to be in the transfer from Yahoo to Pacbell, but for one
sending domain only (and not always from that domain). I think I need to
get yahoo involved in this. Thanks for the help.

Please include all of previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup,
Bob.

If you view the messages in question from your inbox at the pacbell webpage
for your email account, is the text of the message blank there, too? If not
and if these 2 correspondents are using MS Outlook, ask that they only send
to you using Plain Text format.

I have been severely criticized by other newsgroups for including the entire
string in my replies. They want only the bare minimum of a message that
relates to the response. There doesn't seem to be a standard.

When I have a message sent directly to my Yahoo email address, I have a
filter that puts it into the "saved" mailbox, rather than to the "inbox".
This is so I can separate mail from the yahoo address and the pacbell
address. Messages to the pacbell address go first to the yahoo inbox and
are then transferred to the pacbell inbox. When I had one of my
correspondents try sending directly to my yahoo address, the entire message
showed up (as I expected it to) in my yahoo "saved" mailbox. When I then
manually moved it to the inbox (which then transfers it to the pacbell
address) the message again disappeared. Somehow the yahoo-pacbell interface
is erasing the message. It may have something to do with the length of the
message itself. The ones that disappear seem to be fairly long and are
truncated when they show up on my yahoo "saved" mailbox (but at least they
are there).

Take a look at the Message Source (Ctrl-F3) for the problem messages.
Can you see the message text there?

Are the sender's using Lotus Notes? Look at the message header for the
X-Mailer: header.

If they are using Lotus Notes, McAfee SpamKiller corrupts the message
headers so that OE can't properly interpret the message. You can verify
that SpamKiller processed the message because there will be a message
header from SpamKiller. Merely passing through SpamKiller causes the
corruption. Turning off any specific filters won't help. You have to
uninstall SpamKiller.

YES! That seems to be the problem. They are using Lotus Notes; I am using
SpamKiller (disabled, but not
de-installed). The strange thing though is that this is not consistent.
Sometimes the messages come through just fine;
other times, the text is missing (but I can see it using Cntl-F3, sometimes
readable, other times gibberish).

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll uninstall SpamKiller.

Also turn off email scanning in the anti-virus. It doesn't provide any
added protection anyway.

SpamKiller'd not have anything to do with it if the message displayed the
same at the Yahoo and/or Pacbell webmail page.

The message displayed fine at the Yahoo webmail page (I just never thought
to look at it there), but when it was
transferred to my Pacbell Outlook Express server, the message disappeared.
