I agree with your assessment of a corrupts something. I've got to take a

OK. Returning to an Image of the previous is a very good idea. Unless you
want to play with this more, <eg>.
Then try my methodology for installing one or the other new NIC. Or accept
the other idea of simply fixing your old one (try using Duck Tape [aka duct
tape]!)

Don't think I wasn't contemplating taking a soldering iron to the old card.
However, the far reaching implication here is that I no longer could add
another network type card, for example an antenna, to shed the wired
connection.
This is all somewhat academic I suppose, because this old machine is not
being used for much now. It is a Pentium II and has served me well. It's
the principle of the thing; it should work correctly. And now that this is
a spare computer, the technology and storage vehicle availabilty to create
images takes a lot of risk out of trying things. (by the way I'm using
Acronis' True Image) I'm not worried about losing anything. I can tinker
and learn.
So aside from setting this old machine up for firewall duty and maybe
putting Linux another partition for learning purposes, I'm not reluctant to
try things to have some fun and learn more.

Gary:
Resumed testing. Restored system to original trouble state. Installed
network printer for further tests. Was able to go to internet, network
print, and share files. Did clean boot, then followed your procedure to
remove network, recycle DUN etc. Powered down and put new card in
different slot with old card still in. Installation went off without
incident. Trouble still in and was able to share files, but not print to
the network printer. When attempting to print, got message “Could not
create socket".
Repeated the clean boot, remove network etc. Powered down, put new card in
new slot, did not put old card back. Same trouble and characteristics. It
appears that any subsequent installation clobbers TCP/IP ability to go out,
ability to communicate with other PCs intranetwork is maintained.
The network printer is on the same net as the computers but goes through
the server switch, yet Windows couldn't get a socket, nor could a laptop
that I plugged into a spare port on the print server 4-port switch
communicate.
Your thoughts on how to proceed? |

Referring to the D-Link, restore the image and then, without doing a clean
boot, uninstall ICS from Windows Setup tab>Communications. Again without
bothering with a clean boot, simply uninstall all items from Network applet,
power down, replace card and, without installing any software, install
drivers directly. Put the *contents* of the Win98 folder on a floppy for
easy locating.
Do nothing else that I haven't mentioned, then report back with results.
I'll have a closer look at the D-Link software, but not until Thurs.
afternoon. No time unless I again develop insomnia. Past midnight is the
only time I can get quality computer time where I am right now, and I seem
to be cycled back to normal schedule as of this moment. My wife certainly
hopes so....

Commutations does not have ICS, or I don't recognize what else it may
fall under. With image restored condition, under Communications I have:
Dial-up ATM support (unchecked)
Dial Up Networking (checked)
Dial-Up server (unchecked)
Direct Cable Connection (checked)
Hyper Terminal (checked)
Microsoft Chat (unchecked)
Phone Dialer (unchecked)
Universal Plug and Play (checked)
Virtual Private networking (unchecked)
Win 98:
Burned a CD. FYI, Win 98 is located at C:\ Win 98 and this location is
specified in the registry. There are no other copies Win98 cab files.
Regarding D-Link card.
This trouble condition occurs not only with the D-Link card. I have also
"installed" in a base Image condition the following:
Trendnet USB to 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter
Airlink PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter.
Both installations triggered the no port available, inability to go
internet.

Pending on your answer to above I'll proceed.

Done.
I'll be back on line after 2 p.m.today |

More test results, thought not exactly what you were looking for,....
Maybe.

Found the following "ICS Troubleshooting " at the following site:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ics/ics_troubleshoot.htm
*
" Make sure you uninstall ICS via the Add/Remove Control Panel. It's
under Windows Setup - Internet Tools. Don't just delete the ICS Network
adapter. (Thnx to Jerry Stewart for this tip.)
*
02/14/00 If you're having trouble getting ICS to install or re-
install after you've uninstalled it, try this hint from Kent England of
SOHOinter.net:
Sometimes after you have un-installed ICS, you cannot get ICS to
re-install from the Add/Remove Programs, Windows setup tab, Internet Tools,
ICS item. Sometimes the Internet Connection Sharing option does not even
show up.
Find C:\windows\inf\ics.inf, right-click, and select "install".
This should force Windows to re-install ICS. Be sure to have your Win98SE
CD handy, although you may be able to skip installing files because the
uninstaller does not remove any/all files. Then again, this is a stuck
uninstall, so no guarantees!"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I located the ics.inf file and installed it. I now have under Add /Remove
Programs; Windows Setup Tabs "Internet tools" and under it I now have
"Internet Connection Sharing" entry .
I then proceeded to install ICS and then remove it. So I placed a check on
ICS and progressed to the installation where Windows wants to reboot and
it did, and immediately experienced the problem: no internet but able to go
intranet.
Checked back to see if ICS was still checked off and it wasn't.
What do you suggest? |

Or, try Firefox browser:

If that works, then IE is definitely the problem.

Gary:
I sense this is not a networking issue. Something is corrupted somewhere.
I have a few parting thoughts and questions. I'd appreciate your input.
For now, I have to travel this weekend to visit mom in a nursing home.
I'll pick this thing up early next week.
I'd hate to have to reinstall, but may be the only way to save the
patient. Thanks again for jumping in.
> Or, try Firefox browser:

Firefox has been installed all along. One of my first tests after trying
a different card or whatever is to click on Firefox. With the trouble in
I immediately get a Firefox couldn't open message.
Why do you suspect IE and what could it cause? How’s about any of the
Microsoft security updates?
With Firefox IE, Outlook Express, the instant a NIC install fails I
cannot go out to the internet and it creates error messages and results
more severe than when I cannot get out because my cable is unplugged.
This seems to indicate that a setting or something has been changed as a
result of the faulty install. Yet part of the install takes, I see the
card in Device Manager, and can communicate intranet.
Is there some kind of Trap freeware out there that I could trigger on a
particular message or event?
It would be nice to see the flow chart on installation of a NIC.
This one thing that keeps occurring every time I install a NIC or when I
tried to install ICS sticks in my craw and that is a Small window pops up
and says that the version of VIP.386 it is trying to install is older
than the one that is currently on the computer. Do I want to keep the
newer one? It would be nice to know what program is trying to install
VIP.386. I've done a search for vip.386 throughout the entire computer
and it never found that old VIP file. Could that be a clue? Does that
message always appear even on a good Windows98 SE? |

Nope...Nope...Nope...Nope.
Restored image, downloaded/installed IE 6. Trouble still in.
I think I can say this is not a network problem. It looks like I may have a
memory conflict. I'm really on unchartered ground here. I'll have to do
some homework on address assignments and ranges. Problem probably belongs
in Setup or General newsgroup.
In addition to the same old trouble manifestations, when the trouble is in,
I've been using NETSCAN.EXE, freeware, to scan the network and it displays
the IPs of what is on my network. Initially I was using Netscan from one of
my other computers. About two days ago I installed and tried it from the
computer with the trouble. Every time I run Netscan on the bad guy, it
successfully displays the IPs; however, in the process it generates three
"Thread Exception - Access violation at address errors". The first write
address is 00000013, read address 1CA6A0CCA that is followed by two more
violations in which both address are the same: 46000000 46000000 and
64655274. 64655274. |

Forgot to include info on Netscan.
http://www.download3k.com/System-Utilities/Other-Utilities/Download-
SoftPerfect-Network-Scanner.html
A free multi-threaded IP, SNMP and NetBIOS scanner with a modern interface
and several advanced features. It is intended for both system
administrators and general users who are interested in computer security.
The program pings computers, scans for listening TCP ports and displays
which types of resources are shared on a network (including system and
hidden). In addition, it allows you to mount shared resources as network
drives, browse them using Windows Explorer, filter the results list and
more. SoftPerfect Network Scanner can also check for a user-defined port
and report back if one is open. It can also resolve host names and auto-
detect your local IP range. |

Appreciated your help this past week. I feel you've help me further define
what/where the trouble may be.
For your info, my next approach, linked to your IE theory, will be to look
at( research) all the Security KBs and uninstall them methodically. They
are frequently in the area we've been pokin' around.
Bye and
Thanks |
