Thanks for he help a few weeks ago on a driver for flash drives using
Win98SE.
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php
I got a 8GB flash drive. Using Win2K, I can copy a 1GB file in about 5
minutes. So it apears that the hardware is fine.
Using Win98SE driver at the link above, it takes 18 minutes to copy
the same file. The first minute, it reaches 20% complete. then it
virtually stops for 5 minutes. Then the copy rate increases taking a
total of 18 minutes to complete. This fluctuating data rates is new to
me

Is the win2k machine using USB2
and the Win98 machine using USB1 ?
If so , that could explain the difference |

The Win98SE driver site states that
"Version 3 of the drivers includes generic USB 2.0 controller
drivers" |

Might also be associated with the general large file copy issues in 98 with
IE6 [shell and browser DLLs], if not hardware related.

If your hardware does not support the USB 2 standard you won't get version 2
throughput rates, regardless of what the drivers are capable of. You need
to check the hardware specifications for your USB ports.
The apparent fluctuation in the transfer speed is probably due to errors in
calculating the time that the copy will take. As there are a number of
different operations involved, it is difficult to accurately represent what
proportion of the whole process is completed at any one point.

As mentioned in the other replies, the USB 2.0 driver will not provide USB 2.0
speeds unless the hardware ports are USB 2.0. Are you saying you are trying both
operating systems on the same hardware, that is, you are dual-booting Win2K and
Win98SE on the same machine, and are testing it that way? If not on the same
machine, then you are not testing the same hardware.

OK. The generic driver for the USB 2.0 Controller that is included with the USB
mass storage driver package you downloaded
(http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php) may
not work as well as a driver made specifically for your controller and chipset (that
is, a driver from the motherboard or chipset maker), causing slower transfer.
What motherboard are you using? Does the manufacturer supply USB 2.0 Controller
drivers for Win98SE for that board, either on the CD that comes with the board, or
as a download from their support site?
If a USB 2.0 driver for Win98SE is available from the board maker, you should use
that rather than using the generic controller driver. In that case, you should
uninstall the version 3.x generic driver you downloaded, and install the board
manufacturer's controller driver instead. Then, install version 2.x of the generic
drivers rather than version 3.x. Version 2.x only includes the mass storage driver,
without the USB 2.0 driver:
