If I am typing a long document, I have to save, save, save about every
sentence or else I lose everything. This window pops open telling me that
something has finished scanning for errors and on the blue bar at the top it
does a countdown. When the countdown is finished another smaller window
opens and it says an error has occurred and I only have the option to close.
As I watch, it closes itself and the screen goes blue and shows:

Error OE: 014F: 00005ED7

Then my only option is CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer and I have lost
all work not saved. This happens again and again. What is going on?

OE (or 0E) errors, often referred to as Fatal Exception Errors, can be
difficult and time consuming to troubleshoot. They can be both either
hardware or software related and are likely to require some detective work
on your part.

How recently have they started to occur?
New hardware fitted?
Particular application running in the background?
Connected to the web?
Etc., etc., ...

Try some processes of elimination - disconnect non-essential pieces of
hardware, close all but the absolute minimum programs, disconnect from the
web, note precisely at what point/action you are doing when the error
occurs.

certainly suggests that something else was running at the same time.
Scandisk? Defrag? Some other third party utility?

In the meantime here are some possible pointers/guides :-

"What Are Fatal Exception Errors"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/150314

"Fatal Exception Errors"
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/fatlexer.htm
and scroll down to the section "Fatal Exception Errors: 0E"

Have patience and good luck
