Space Usage

34% Windows
35% _Restore
21% Program Files
7% (C: Free Space)

Getting messages where Im running out of disk space.

Is there a way to clean out this _restore? or any suggestions please.

Sean - it looks like you have a runaway System Restore archive - do you have
Norton/Symantec software installed??

To clear the archive, you're going to have to do a little surgery.....
Boot to DOS, using your Startup Disk (if you don't have one and can't make
one from Start | Add/Remove Programs, then download a diskmaker from
www.bootdisk.com, and create the floppy by running the file)

At the A:\> prompt, type the following commands (followed by [return])

ATTRIB -S -R -H C:\_RESTORE

REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

When the A:\> prompt returns, remove the floppy, and reboot the PC. The
Control Files will be rebuilt, and a Restore point should be created.

Then delete the C:\OLDREST folder, and reboot again.

Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder - usually one notch
above the minimum is quite sufficient for normal use.

Noel, thanks for your reply and good to hear from you.

The notebook I have does not have a floppy.

Its a Sony Vaio with no internal CD/DVD Drive (optical drive) usually comes
with docking station, however, not working.

Not too sure if I can create a start up disk with a memory stick and if so
can I change the BIOS to boot from a memory slot?

Seems odd wouldnt be able too, are these memory slots not similar to what a
floppy would be?

Hmmm...... I only recently got to play with my first Vaio laptop ( not a
particularly happy experience, but I mostly got it tamed<g>)

Which model are you using???

There is am option in www.bootdisk.com which allows you to download an image
for a CD drive - but you say that you have none, even in the docking station
(or is it that the docking station is goosed??)

What does the POST (black/white screen at boot) say when you boot with the
box docked to the station??
Does that recognise the CD, but Windows not?? - if so, that may be the way
to go.....

No docking station at all.

Only thing that I would like to use is this memory slot.

Who knows how to work the BIOS to recognize this as a bootable option and
why not? This slot is just another drive any similar to what the floppy used
to be, right?

We need to know the EXACT model of your Vaio - it should be on the base of
the thing (your s/n is useful too - but can be considered confidential, if
so, then email it to me - my email is valid - and I'll see what I can

Nothing - all it does is copy files to a 'holding cell' on the HD, compress
some of them and then save the result to the floppy - NOT to the USB drive
(although if you can force the drive to appear as the A: drive you may be
lucky)!!

Hmmmm - maybe I was a little sharp there.......

The registry has very little power over the existing filesystem AFAIK - so
files that are marked as the most highly protected in Win ME (the SR
archive) cannot just be removed at will with a few sneaky Windows tricks -
AFAIK, the ONLY way to delete the archive is to boot to DOS and do it from
there.

You could, if you have a big enough RAM stick, and your PC supports booting
from USB, boot from Bart PE and use that to delete the files - but that
presupposes that you have a recent XP and Bart PE available to use for the
work.

....or you could use a Linux (<ptui!>) - with the same provisos as for Bart.

Does your PC support booting from USB? - AFAICT, it doesn't. - RTFM for
that.

Oh - another thought occurs... you could parallel install another operating
system onto the drive in another partition and use that to delete the
files......
