| (I can't believe that "disk defragmenter" didn't bring up other posts!) I'm
simply not able to defrag my drive. It gets to 1% and quits. Any ideas?
I'm trying to solve other behavior problems: freezing up, various error
messages, etc. I guess I'm going to have to reinstall ME, but I'm concerned
about how long it'll take to download several years worth of Windows UPDATES!

Add'l. info: Should also mention that I recall need to use scandisk before
defrag. I try, but when it begins checking file allocation tables, etc.
scandisk gives up on me. Turning off VirusScan and even Firewall doesn't
keep scandisk from quitting.

I don't honestly think you tried very hard when searching as "defrag"
should have brought up lots of hits since there have been hundreds of
posts on this topic over the 6½ years that has passed since the release of
Win Me. I also think the very last thing that you should be
contemplating, especially for this particular problem, is to reinstall Win
Me.
My first suggestion would be to boot to Safe Mode and then run defrag from
there with no other application running. If you still encounter problems,
whilst in Safe Mode, disable any background applications you have running
such as your antivirus application and firewall and then try running
defrag again.

Mike, I just tried entering defrag again and the response is "Your query for
"defrag" did not return results." Got same for "defragmenter." Try it.
(Thanks for suggestion. I'll try it in Safe Mode.)

OK. So what were you searching? Win Me's Help & Support after which you
then posted to a newsgroup but didn't think to search the newsgroup for
similar postings?

PS A quick check shows around 4,500 threads for which the subject line
contains the string "defrag" have been posted to the various Microsoft
Windows Millennium newsgroups in the last 6½ years with the number of
distinct posts to these threads being well over 15,000. 2,310 of those
threads were posted to this systemtools newsgroup.
However since Win Me went out of support in mid 2006 there have been few
posts on any subject to any of the Win Me newsgroups and probably only a
dozen new threads with defrag in the subject in the last year so perhaps
it is not surprising that you didn't find any posts when you checked.
