Gary,

Thanks for all your good work on your Time Zone patch. It worked on both my
Win98se and my old but still running Win95!!! Never a bit of trouble at any
stage of d/l, install and function.

You're welcome. Glad to be of service, though my own preferred solution
would have been a bit more elegant, <s>.

Gary
I guess I thought when I ran the program it made all the changes. I didn't
understand I had to set the time manually.

You shouldn't have had to set the time manually, it's automatic. All I can
say is that if your Time Zone is set to "Eastern (US & Canada)" and your
messages are showing "-0400" then you're in Daylight Saving time. Can't say
what happened to the clock thing, though it's my understanding that people
with several machines to deal with reported that some changed automatically,
and others didn't. Dunno...

TZedit with Gary's instructions worked perfectly on three of my WinXP
machines and three of my Win98SE machines.

Fred, read the instructions that you must follow immediately after you
run TZ_UP_9X at Gary's site.

those instructions in my own words:

1. after you click on the .exe file above, you must double click the
clock in your System Tray, which is on your lower right hand corner on
your Desktop.

2. you then will select a different time zone than your current one in
the Time Zone scroll bar, and then you will click Apply. So, for
instance, if you current Time Zone is (GMT -05:00) Eastern Time (US &
Canada), select a different one on the list and click Apply.

3. you now must reverse back to your current time zone and then click
Apply. To follow with the example above, if your time zone were
Eastern Time (US & Canada, you now switch to this time zone.

4. press OK, and you're done.

NB: the example above with the Eastern time zone is my actual time
zone. You may have a different time zone than mine.

I hope this helps.

I also found it confusing. Gary's instructions are so good that they appear
to be complete. It's not intuitively obvious that once all of Gary's steps
have been completed, that the hour must still be manually changed. For
clarity I would suggest adding that as a final step.

I downloaded http://grystmill.com/downloads/TZ_UP_9x.exe and ran it, then
followed Gary's instructions. My clock still showed the time as one hour
earlier than it should be, meaning it was still showing the time prior to
this new change to DST. I was expecting that the time would automatically
change to the correct new DST time, as it used to when Windows handled it.
It's not a problem for me to change it, but I think others will not realize
that there is still a further step required once Gary's steps have been
completed.

Thanks Gary for a helpful piece of work. Smile

Did you run the patch before the change was supposed to occur, or
afterwards?

Mine changed automatically. I didn't have to change it manually.

I ran the patch today. Normally DST would not take effect until about three
weeks from now, just as it was the U.S. prior to this year. So, the
automated DST change that Windows normally does would not have occurred yet.

This year most of Canada switched to DST early Sunday morning March 11, as
did most of the U.S.

Gary, I was just curious, did you ever find any problems with that other DST
update that had been posted last year? (from that MSFN web site; it was a
small exe file that included an INF file, but the ID numbers got a bit
confusing, as you recall).

I had used that one, and it worked fine over here, and there was no setup
routine (except after installation, it did force a reboot). But I was just
curious what you had found in that regard.

I'm assuming yours is quite similar, but in yours I think you said you had
to initially change the time zone and then change it back to get it to
stick, and yours saves a backup of the previous settings, which this other
one doesn't. (if my memory is right)

Don't know what to tell you, Henry, except that the results for people who
had a lot of machines to update were mixed... Some updated the clock at the
right time, others didn't. I never figured out what might be the cause. In
your case, the system properly changed it's Time Zone setting (GMT offset),
but didn't change the clock. Weird.

There are a number of unofficial patches out there, and I didn't check them
out. Many are for NT and 2K systems, aimed at sysadmins. Anyway, I have no
comment on any of the others. I did work out a few ways to make it even more
automated, requiring only a reboot, or even not that, but they were too
tricky for "home users", and that's who I was aiming for. I also have yet to
find my oldest MSDN disks with Windows NT4, so I couldn't test the trickier
stuff.

Maybe, if I get bored, I'll work on them some more. Who knows?

Well, I hope for your sake this kind of thing doesn't start happening
every year now-- even just to foreigners! Now that TZEdit alone has

(a) Maybe add some "IF EXIST" or "IF NOT EXIST" to it to avoid the DOS
error messages.

(b) Maybe add an additional line to the instructions that Windows won't
actually adjust the hour even if all other conditions are met-- until a
reboot is done on or after the date of change has arrived. Since he ran
the app a day late, he was thinking it would adjust immediately.
