But I've only turned the USB drive on after bootup (I mean in Windows), and
haven't checked it otherwise, since I really have no need to. It's only
being used as a backup.

Oooops. That's right. There's no way it could mess with pre-existing
letters, then. Sorry for confusing things. OK. That's that, then. Your
Vantec is definitely a candidate when the time comes for me, Colorado.

I'm getting another one for backing up my OTHER internal HD. I have TWO
internal HDs, which logically need TWO external drives for backup. OK, now
I think we're done. Smile

Hi Gary,
I hope that you can come up with a simpler way to do this. I went to your
website and downloaded the Patch and read the instructions. No, I had a
problem understanding the instructions on what to do. Maybe an exe. file
would help. So now I have the file on the desktop of my computer.

If it's an INF file, did you right mouse click on it and click install, or
just double click it itself, to get it to install?

Bill,
I did not install it yet. All I did was unzip the file to a folder. I think
there were 4 or 5 files in it. One of them was a registry key, another was
the instructions that said something about backing up registry first. I quit
there because I just did not understand. Today, I read that Gary was not
finished with the instructions. I will wait until he finishes his
instructions. Maybe someone can come up with a great alternative, something
simple I hope. I need simpler instructions.

Follow these instructions, line-by-line. It is VERY straightforward.

Use the Time Zone Editor (Tzedit.exe) utility

This tool allows you to create and edit time zone entries
for the Date/Time settings in Control Panel.

Download the Tzedit.exe utility package now.

Double-click on this file, which is a self-extracting file
- in other words, you don't need WinZip.

It will expand into 2 files - TZEDIT.EXE and TZEDIT.HLP
Just make sure that you note where they will expand to,
which should be the folder C:\Program Files\TZEdit.

You are now finished with the TZEDIT.EXE which you downloaded.
The following references to TZEDIT.EXE relate to the expanded file
now located in the C:\Program Files\TZEdit folder.

Now,

1 Switch to the C:\Program Files\TZEdit folder,
and double-click on TZEDIT.EXE to run it.

2. In the Time Zones list, select your time zone, and then click Edit.
For example, if you live on the West Coast of the USA,
click (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana, and then click Edit.

3. In the Edit Time Zone dialog box,
click to select the Automatically set Daylight Saving Time check box.

4. Specify the correct daylight saving time start and end dates.

To do this, follow these steps:
a. In the Start Day box, click the number of the day,
the corresponding day of the week, and the month that you want.
In other words, click Second, click Sunday, and then click October.
b. Select the time that you want to start daylight saving time.
In other words, select 2:00 AM.
c. In the Last Day box, click the number of the day,
the corresponding day of the week, and the month that you want.
In other words, click Last, click Sunday, and then click February.
d. Select the time that you want to end daylight saving time.
In other words, select 2:00 AM.
e. In the Daylight Bias list, select the time change offset to be used
when daylight saving time is in effect.
In other words, to set the clock forward 1 hour,
leave the default setting of +1:00.
f. Click OK, and then click Close.

This updates the database used by the Date/Time applet,
but DOES NOT impact your current Time Zone selection settings.
In other words, Daylight Saving Time is still going to start on April 1st this year
as far as your computer is concerned, unless you do something
to make it pick up the database change that you just made.

The "something" that you need to do is very simple.

5. a. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel,
and then double-click Date/Time.
b. Click the Time Zone tab.
c Select a different time zone than your current time zone, and then click Apply.
d Select your current time zone, and then click Apply.
In other words, change to another zone, and then change right back again.

That is it.

On your computer, Daylight Saving Time will now start 3 weeks earlier this year,
and will end 1 week later, in accordance with the new policy.

If this sounds complicated, I assure you that it is not.
It took you longer to read my post than it will take you to make the change.

I check the registry on one of the systems that I had patched and not
tested by setting the time forward. Indeed, TimeZoneInformation was
the old way. Then I set the time and applied it. Indeed
TimeZoneInformation was ready for 2007. I had fallen prey to a
version of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. I am now a believer
in the extra steps.

One at a time, and usually at completely different times of the month.
There is no relation between the two (as to when I do them). Only one is
the boot (and program) drive, however, and so I back that one up a LOT more
often.

When the second USB external HD enclosure comes in, I'll put it on the desk
right next to the other one, and plug one or the other in (via the USB 2.0
connector) when I want to make the backups. Actually, I could leave them
both connected (but turned off) since I have a two port USB 2.0 card, but
I'd rather have one of the USB connectors free and disconnected for other
things).

Very, very, very easy to do.

matter of the drivers that came with the Vantec USB 2.0 External Hard
Drive Enclosure that would convert my Win98SE USB 1 to that? That's my

Well, you can also use USB 1.1 with the Vantec enclosure, by the way, but if
you want USB 2.0 speeds, I believe you may need a USB 2.0 card. Let's
see...

In the manual it says, "for USB 2.0 speeds, the system must support USB 2.0
specifications" - whatever that tells you. I was under the impression that

I probably need the WinZip one, anyway. I'm used to using it for personal
stuff, just never had a need to post stuff publicly until now.

But with all the relatively recent "forced" protection against scripts and
the like, using something like this is almost required.

Thing is, if I can beat what ails me lately, I plan to do a lot more of this
stuff for business reasons (not internet posting, but for business
consulting.) Creating custom scripts, etc.

Oh. So, still it would be good for me, then-- if your interpretation of
