I seem to have a corrupt system font - the symbols in the minimize,
restore, maximize boxes in the upper-right corner of all windows has
changed to a different symbol and drop-down list choices now appear
with various Greek alphabet letters instead of the normal ones. For
example a 'tick' or a 'x' in a selection box now appears as a stylized
M (best description I can come up with) and I can't tell if it is a
'tick' or a 'x' because one is a bolded version of the other, etc.
etc.
Any idea what file or files have become corrupted?
(Am using OEM (Toshiba) version of ME and only have their recovery CD
which only allows a complete HD reformat, i.e. I can't do a 'repair').
Thanks in advance. |

Regarding the Max/min/restore symbols issue, this is sometimes caused by a
missing/corrupted font.
Try:- "Description of and Troubleshooting the Marlett TrueType Font"
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];134861" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];134861</a>
If the first part of the article doesn't fix it, note and try the section
near the bottom page, referring to the maximum number of fonts and the
suggestion of deleting the ttfcache file.
HTH and good luck

Hi, all of a sudden I have all my icons presented with names as garbage. The system seems to be working fine but I cannot see any characters under my Icons or in any of the panels. What is it? How can I try to change to a different "default" font for WinXP Home? Before reinstalling from he manifacturer CD (format disk!), I would like to try something else. DOS Box works fine so it should be, if any, a command line.
Thank you very much
