I'm trying to copy a bunch of files (files & sub files) from my hard drive
to a DVD but all the files copied on the DVD are in READ ONLY format. After
the first occurrence, I returned to the main folder, clicked PROPERTIES and
removed the checkmark in READ ONLY. A subsequent screen appeared with a
checkmark in "apply changes to this folder and subfolders and files". After
recopying to DVD, each file and folder remains designated READ ONLY.

There has to be something obvious that I'm missing. Can anyone enlighten me.
Thanks in advance.

A DVD like a CD is a 'read only' media. If you want to make your files
'writable' you must use re-writable DVD's and re-writeable CD's - i.e.
DVD-RW or CD-RW.

However!! - You will probably also need to use a 'Packet- writing' utility,
usually provided with your 'burning software' for best results - not that
they are necessarily particularly brilliant <g>

Thanks for the quick response, Mart.

I did try a DVD+RW, after initially using a DVD+R (VBG), but the files and
folders have the checkmark as READ ONLY, on the RW. When I try to remove the
checkmark, a message appears stating "an error occurred applying attributes
to the file".

This is interesting in that I have been using DVD's as a backup media for my
personal files. I use the +RW because after a save, I'll generally erase the
previous disc and use it the next time. Thankfully, I haven't had an
emergency, but in the event of a disaster, I would certainly hope to be able
to upload the DVD files back on to my hard disc. But it now appears that I
may have been wasting my time, if I am not able to manipulate the files when
needed.

Am I missing something here?

Mart or Mike....can you settle an argument here? My neighbour gave me a
CD-RW to copy photos to of her son's wedding. I had one b*tch of a time
with it and vaguely remembered someone saying....."format the CD-RW
first".

I eventually copied them to one of my regular CD-R discs and they copied
in mere minutes. I formatted her CD-RW but have not used it since.

She is ADAMANT that one doesn't have to format rewriteable CD's......I
am just as ADAMANT that you guys and Willy have told me I should. Why
else did Willy put InCD on here......I always forget why that is on
here, lol.

To give you a clue as to her knowledge of computers......she didn't know
anything about CD's. She thought CD-RW meant it was better than a CD-R
cuz it had one more letter and cost more.........sigh!!

Just a thought here coz I had that happen with files from WinME that I
copied for this XP computer......and trust me, this is a VAGUE
remembrance.....so if I am wrong, Mike and Mart better let me know
(nicely, lol).

If you copy one of these files/folders back to your computer....just to
test this.....I believe you can then change it from *read only* to
whatever you want (archive?....flying blind here). I am pretty sure
that is what I had to do with some of my files.

Perhaps I should amplify the following statement :-

> A DVD like a CD is a 'read only' media.

i.e. write once - read many, whereas re-writable media are write many - read
many.

Why would you want a (I presume) backup to be writable?

If you want to write to them, copy them to a hard drive or other rewritable
medium.

Walter
What I want is to have the ability to work with certain files if ever I need
to copy the DVD back to my hard drive. It's why I'm backing up onto a DVD.
I have since learned that the attribute can be changed when the data is
transferred to the hard drive.

Although a fair comment, DD didn't actually specify that they were for
back-up purposes - hence my reference to 'Packet writing' etc. which can be
used for a 'portable, re-writable media' similar for example, to a floppy
disk.

Hi Heather, you would 'Format' for use as 'Packet Writing' e.g. InCD etc.,
which permits the CD/DVD to be used as say, a floppy. In other words, you
can write/delete/overwrite *individual* files - as you would with a floppy.

But note - this method can be somewhat unreliable especially transferring
the media between different pc's - I recall Mike gave a spiel on this
subject a while back.

I must admit that I don't use WR's as often as I did, preferring pensticks
instead. Much more convenient.

Sounds about right - I rarely use RW CD's or DVD's these days. See my other

Thanks puss......I never use the damn things. But I vividly remember
asking Mike about the *read only* thing on my backup CD's....which could
have been some of my mp3's. Anyhow.....as you said in your other post,
just copy them to the HD and then change them. Worked for me.

Get to bed, young man!!

Hi DD, not too sure if you can do that to 'batched' RW files, hence the idea
of packet writing.

I think that you only need to change the attributes of the uploaded files on
your HDD - no biggie!
BTW - I *think* that al folders remain as 'read only' in XP - although files
can be altered, of course.

It's too late here for me to investigate further <g> or should that be

Thanks Heather for your insight, and Mart for getting back to me so quickly
again. I think you are both saying the same, that is, while the attribute on
the DVD may be READ ONLY, when I save the files/folders from the DVD to my
hard drive, I will then be able to change the attribute.

What I'm trying to do is transfer a whole bunch of files/folders to someone
that is taking over a function from me. After saving to the DVD, I was
trying to clean it up a bit by deleting certain files that I knew were of no
interest to someone else when I noticed the READ ONLY attribute.

Again, thanks for the feedback, it was greatly appreciated.

You are most welcome, DD. I knew what you were asking, but didn't put
the answer into *tech speak*, lol. Mart properly described what I was
trying to convey. I do recall changing an entire folder from *read
only* to *archive* I believe.

I just checked Windows Explorer and with XP there is no Archive.....so
must have been mucking about with WinME.

Glad to hear from you again......Heather

Psssst......don't tell the Loon I have "insight".....he will turn inside
out, LOL!! He has been giving me a hard time re that sort of thing. I
listen to what folks are not saying......kinda like reading between the
lines, as the saying goes.

Heather, you need to right-click on the descriptor line (Name, Type, Size,
Date Modified etc.) and select Attributes. It will then show the attributes
including Archive.

Mart - Fully refreshed (well almost!)

Mart.....doesn't seem to work that way. If I right-click etc., I get at
the bottom.....*read only, hidden and a clickable box called Advanced*
When clicking on Advanced, I get a box with the following....

Archive and Index Attributes as a header.....
Then 2 boxes....sometimes the first one is ticked off, other times only
the second one.....
1. File is ready for archiving
2. For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this file.

The another area below that to Compress or Encrypt attributes.....
1. Compress contents to save space. This is never ticked off in the
ones I have checked.

Could this be because at one time I had Google Indexing on here, but
took it off before it finished the job. Didn't like it coz it was very
intrusive IMO. Or is it due to file compression with Disk Cleanup???
Wild guesses here.

Thanks.....Heather

Not entirely sure that I do know what it is all about. I will
investigate further and perhaps drop you a line. Have to turn on my
WinME to see if that is what I am remembering as opposed to XP.

Thanks, Heather

Just as a follow-up, this will confirm that upon saving files/folders from
DVD disc to harddrive, I am able to remove READ ONLY attribute.

Once again , thanks for educating me, once again.
