I would like to do a clean install of Windows Me on A dell dimension
4100.
Could someone kindly outline the steps in order.

I previously reinstalled over old version and had to get help from
India..

Thanks.

Roger,

You need to partition and format the drive after booting to DOS using a
Win Me boot floppy after which you can install Win Me. Note that this
will wipe all existing data from your hard drive so make sure you save
everything you need to keep before proceeding.

For more information see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 255867 -
"How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition
a Hard Disk" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255867) as well as the
file CLEANHD.TXT which is in the Win 9x folder on the Win Me CD and also
as KB271673 - "Windows Millennium Edition Cleanhd.txt File Contents"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=271673).. This should help you get
started.

Attn Mike M,

I have created a boot disk. The C drive is the original hard drive.
Can I just format C?

Roger,

Yes, the only drive/partition that you need to format if you have more
than one is the one to which you intend to install Win Me, that is the
drive that enumerates as C: when you boot from a floppy.

FORMAT C:
is all you need to do. Win Me will then do the rest. The version of
FORMAT included with Win Me and that is on the Win Me startup disk doesn't
support the /S switch of earlier versions.

May I again refer you to the file CLEANHD.TXT which is in the Win 9x
folder on the Win Me CD and also as KB271673 - "Windows Millennium Edition
Cleanhd.txt File Contents" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=271673) as
this contains most if not all of the information you are likely to
require.

Roger,

Thanks for the feedback.

May I strongly recommend that you visit the Windows Update site and
install the various patches that were released for Win Me since its
release in June 2000. I would also suggest that the first patch you
install is the 290700 patch for system restore which should then reinstate
system restore as a useful tool that will usually allow you to back out of
subsequent problems you might encounter when running Win Me by allowing
you to roll back the system to a previous date when it was working
correctly (but best if not more than say a week previously) without the
loss of user data.
