Chances are that it's the CD-Drive from your description - but if you have a
normal CD-head/lens cleaner disc, then use that a couple of times and then
try again.
If that fails, either get a new drive and install it, or take it to a decent
techie, and get them to test and repair (they'll probably just install a new
drive anyhow, and charge you for the service!)
