Here is situation:
I've an old PC with WIN95, 4.0.C and IE5.5 (NG for IE5.5 gone now). I can
log on to my ISP and have made all their rec. Dial-up setting, still cannot
go to any URL. I've IE5.5 set for Internet Zone, Medium settings.
What else can I do to get on NET & browse?
This is old PC I'm giving to brother with no prior use of one, a beginner
type PC so to say. Can't upgrade to WIN98 as it tells me PC has no math
co-processor in it.
All works good with above exception.

If you are using AllTel or Windstream, see
http://www2.windstream.net/alltel/portal/customersupport/?hrefURL=/cus...ersuppo

If not, start the computer in question, run "winipcfg", click "More Info",
right-click the "IP Configuration" title bar, select "Copy", paste the
information into Notepad, save it to a floppy and repost with the data.

Ben,
As a matter of fact, I use Windstream & was directed by them to the link you
provided, no help though as you've seen by previous posts. I've triple
checked those settings. This one got me puzzled for sure.

The important thing is the "DNS Server" information, which probably has to
be entered manually. If this is already correct, disconnect the problem
computer from the Internet, then go to "Control Panel", "Modems", select
"Diagnostics", highlight the port assigned to the modem, click "More info"
and confirm that the computer can communicate with the modem. Also,
make sure you using a phone number compatible with your modem.

Ben,
Am using the correct number from the Link you sent (BTW--Have used that # on
this PC until I switched to DSL).
PC is communicating with modem okay as all comes back okay, had checked that
on setup. So I'm beat finally on that PC, reakon it'll make a good boat
anchor, lol.
Thanks for all your suggestions & time on this.

Saying that you've triple checking settings doesn't necessarily mean
that the settings are correct. Try this. Drop to the DOS prompt and
enter the command:

ping www.google.com

What happens?

Then do:

ping 64.233.169.147

Any difference?

For www.google.com, it came back "No such Host"
For 64.233.169.147, it pinged, sent 4 packets, received 4, 0 lost, and some
other info about round trip time, etc. If that is needed, I left it on
screen, just I'm disabled and hard to write it all down.

That shows that you're connected to the Net OK, but you don't have
DNS service. I'm not sure what your settings should be, but you could
try configuring Dial-up Networking thusly:

Go to My Computer|Dial-up Networking, right click on your dialup setup
and select Properties. Select the Server Types tab, and then click the
TCP/IP Settings button toward the bottom. Click on Specify Name Server
Address and enter these addresses, 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2, for Primary
and Secondary DNS. Those are open DNS servers that should work for
you. They definitely do work, but there's no guarantee that your ISP
will let you use outside DNS servers. If that doesn't work, you
probably need to contact your ISP to find the right DNS servers.
What are the DNS settings currently?

SPB,
Okay I used the DNS numbers you provided:
Pinged Google, got "Unknown Host",
Pinged 64.233.169.147, it did send/receive 4 packets okay,
But still could not browse NET or send/rec. Email.

The DNS settings I've been using and confirmed they are correct with my ISP
are:
166.102.165.13
166.102.165.11. I deleted my original Dial-up and redone it, same result.
FYI, on Window where I enter the DNS, I have the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th circles
ticked. BTW, I've a PC with WIN98 for my wife to use and it dials up with
those DNS #s and does all okay. Of course that PC has IE6 on it but can't
put 6 on a WIN95 OS.

What next?

Beats me. I wonder if something in the general Control Panel|Network
settings could be overriding the DUN settings? I have Disble DNS
checked in the TCP/IP network components properties.

SPB,
I disabled that setting, would ping the ISP but not Google.
When setting the PC up, I downloaded IE5.5 SP2 (got 4.02 also, installed it
1st then 5.5) from www.oldversion.com, I also DL the latest DUN14-95 from
the MS site.

Just to be sure about something, when you do

ping 64.233.169.147

does it say

Reply from 64.233.169.147...

? I want to make sure the two IP addrsses are the same. What happens
when you enter http://64.233.169.147/ into your web bowser?

Everything looks OK except DNS service, and the DNS servers you
mentioned are working OK. Do to what Ben suggested:

"If not, start the computer in question, run "winipcfg", click "More
Info",
right-click the "IP Configuration" title bar, select "Copy", paste the
information into Notepad, save it to a floppy and repost with the
data."

My brother picked up PC a few hours ago so will have to go over there and do
this. May just let him worry with it as he'll probably sign on to another
ISP. But I'll keep this info just in case.

Thanks to you & Ben for all your time & help. If I do his suggestion, I'll
post back to here with results. Why do I need to put on Notepad then to a
floppy, I don't understand this part?
