Having never done this before, how does one block an entire discussion and
threads related to a poster in Outlook Express. That's the original post
and all related responses as might be presented?
Auto deleting apparently just removes the target poster, but would appear
to leave the threads/replies, or have I got this wrong?

Or is it that I must add some additional third party program to handle the
task?
If so, recommendations?

Use the IE / Help menus to evaluate its functions e.g.
/ Message / Block Sender
Delete
Create Rule from Message.

There appears to be no additional software for newsgroups
(like Mailwasher for email). OE may have all the programming
features you need.

I don't know of any way to do what you want, but PA Bear would probably have the
most informed answer, if he sees this thread.

You can block a sender, but the replies are still visible and available, as you
found out.

You can ignore a conversation, but that won't remove them from your view.

You can select all the posts in the thread using the CTRL key, then hit DELETE to
remove them....but that is hardly an automated solution.

I see no way to block an entire conversation. I have never tried to do so till you
asked.

You have it right. OE isn't real good at rules except in a very
general way. There may be programs that do what you want, don't know,
never checked.

On the few occasions when I've become fed up with a particular
individual I simply mark the initiating post as "ignore" (which can be
done via OE's "rules"). I can then simply skip that thread or -
should I want a giggle - read it.

nfilter is an excellent program:

http://www.nfilter.org

You'd have to play around with it and look at the FAQ of course. I
believe what you would want to do is block both the poster and any post
referencing that poster. Also see this site for ideas on how to use
nfilter:

Good luck!

Your only option would be to mark the conversation as Ignored then change
your (View >) Current View to "Hide Read or Ignore Messages" (or create a
Customize a current view to hide only Ignored messages).

You can create a news rule which filters out all messages where the subject
line contains certain text, if that will help.

Thanks for the links, I WILL check these out.

Not directly related, but perhaps you know: is that the same R. Bonomi that
posts in misc.legal.moderated? Seem to have noted potentially related cross
referencing at times. No need to reply if inappropriate or otherwise, it is
after all, completely off topic in this forum.

Thank you all for responding, I have always wondered about this regarding
OE.

Please noted the one specific posted reply relates to an add-on
prog/filter, and a non-related query.

Please accept this blanket "Thanks".

I ain't that much of a stickler. Usenet posts are publically available.
Seeing as you two have something in common, I'm sure he'd appreciate a
thank-you if you find his nfilter suggestions helpful.

This executable newsreader has very good plonk features.

HTH both of us

ms
-------------------
[Update] Xnews v??.01.30
Date: 17 Mar 2005
Latest version is 5.04.25
Latest TEST version is ??.01.30
Xnews, a free Usenet newsreader for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP.
Features:
100% GNKSA 2.0 (Good Net Keeping Seal of Approval) compliant.
- Plonk file (aka bozo bin).
- Quick filter (type in a regex and only articles whose subject/author
match it will be shown)
- Score file for advanced filtering.
- Support for multiple servers/identities.
- Subscribed groups can be organized into categories.
- Remappable keyboard. -
Binaries handling (mime, base64, uuencode, what have you).
- Optional header and article caching; plus: folders for permanent
archival.

Welcome to my little corner of the software world. Here you'll find
Xnews, a free Usenet newsreader for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP. It's written
in Delphi. I'm Luu Tran, by the way.
Quick Xnews tips
* New users are often confused or annoyed by Xnews opening an article
or thread when they click on the subject. The solution is simple: don't
click on the subject! Instead, click in any of the other columns, like
From or Date or Lines.
* To decode yEnc files, make sure you're using the latest Xnews
version. yEnc files should decode transparently (you don't need to do
anything special).
* To install/update Xnews, just unzip all files into a directory of
your choice. It's safe to overwrite everything. All your data/settings
will remain intact.
* Look at Special | Keyboard mapping. You may find commands you did
not know of!
* Use the queue, Luke! To decode several binaries, you have to first
queue them by pressing space or click on the Q column. Then, hit F4
(decode).

What's New:
+ Per req, you can now specify a port with SMTPHost using the usual
host:port notation.
o ??.01.14 miscounts multiparts.
x Minor cosmetic changes.

You can Hide Read or Ignored messages in View menu > Current View.
Unfortunately, you can't just Ignored messages.
