I need to add a Domain Controller at a Remote site (uses DSL). I have
connectivity via VPN to the Remote site....the remote is a 192.168.3 network
and the Main Network is a 192.168.2 network...
..2 Domain Controller is a Windows 2003 Enterprise edition
..3 new domain controller is a W2003 R2 edition
I saved the .2 DC System State to a CD but it won't let me promote the .3 R2
edition Server to a DC in our domain.
What are my options? before I call MS and open a case |

Did you install the new box with the current DC's System State? Also what
error do you get when you try and run dcpromo?

I did install with a current system state....I backed up system state and
copied to a CD which i took to the remote location within an hour. It said
it could not run DCPROMO because the "Windows 2003 version were not the
same".....(running DC is 2003 Enterprise and REMOTE DC is 2003 R2). This is
also confirmed in the W2003 documentation....the versions must be "identical"
to perform the procedure in this manner. I was wondering if there was a way
around it or do I have to have Identical Versions on the servers?

I would build the box from scratch and then run Dcpromo. I would imagine
that your going to have further problems if you get the box to work with
backed up system state from another machine. I've never tried this but it
sounds like trouble to me. Not sure why your even trying to do it this way
as it sounds like the box is already installed?

I purchased a new server which came with Windows 2003 r2 on it. I simply
wanted to make it a Domain Controller at the Remote Location. |

You should be able to just put it at the remote location and run dcpromo as
long as it can connect back to another domain controller. Using a System
State is to restore a downed machine not to 'clone' a machine.

my goal was to have the remote location have a DC that they could use to
authenticate to the Central Domain rather than go across the DSL wire.
I tried to follow the technet note
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/9c7c4da8-ddaa-4...-967a-7
thanks for the discussion...let you know how it goes

Are you installing a Windows 2003 server into a Windows 2000 domain? This
will require you to run the Adprep.
