Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsme>general (more info?)

Recently I started seeing a dialog box which said the Active Area had
changed. I have never seen that before and have not made any changes to my
Windows settings.

The full text of the message is: "INFORMATION Unable to detect active area.
Active Area has changed."

Can anyone tell me what that means and how I can stop it?

Thank you

Google only finds one reference to this message, and that is in
connection with a machine that was badly infested with
spyware/trojans/viruses.

Go to MVP Malke's Malware Removal site
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
and follow the suggestions there.

Good luck

I have discovered the source of the message . . . it is a function of AVG
7.5.431 Plus Firewall. There is a setting for "Area Detection" and I have
disabled it. That took care of the problem.

I had seen the same reference in Google but knew I did not have a "Malware
Problem" since I regularly run CWShredder, Adaware, Spybot and Hijack This
to make sure my system is clean.

Thanks, Ron, for your interest.

Dave, I am happy to see that you have resolved your "problem" so easily,
and with no damage.
You mentioned several very useful tools to protect your machine, but omitted
any reference to an AV tool.
If you do not use a AV tool, you are running naked!

Please repost with info re: your AV, or to request advice about such tools.

Thanks, Jack, . . . I do use AVG 7.5 and have the version which also
includes their Firewall Program. It is ver. 7.5.431. Thanks for looking out
for me, and for your response. I really need a lot of supervision at my
advanced age. Surprised)

Thanks for your quick response.
Congratulations for using some good protection.

You can evaluate your AVG at these benchmarking sites:

The Virus Bulletin
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/

ICSA Labs - TrueSecure Corp.
http://www.icsalabs.com/html/communities/antivirus/certifiedproducts.shtml

AV-Test
http://www.av-test.org/

P.s. I don't know what you mean by "advanced age", but you are posting to a
sixty-year-old now.

Not only do I believe it, but I applaud it.
BTW, my mother-in-law is e-mailing, using AOL, at age 84.
Heck, she can "chat".

And she pounds Omar Shariff at bridge ...
