Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>work_remotely (more info?)

A system I try to connect to locks up and has to be power cycled when
the connection is first made.
It's a new system, XP SP3. I can connect to other systems. I tried
isolating this system on a different router with just my laptop to try
connecting to it. I get the logon box, enter the password, and on the
control end the display stops there. The system being controlled is
frozen. No mouse movement or anything. The user put Norton Internet
Security 2009 on it. I even tried uninstalling that, though it may
have left registry settings altered, I don't know. Nothing in the
system logs to give a clue, or in Norton logs when it's running.

By the way, in looking for similar issues I see some references to
domain conflicts when using remote. Generally the systems I've
connected to are either not where there is a domain server, or they're
guest computers not logging onto the domain. When they access a shared
folder on the server they just give a logon the server knows. And of
course if you connect from home to work your home system is not on the
domain. So are there criteria around domains and RDC?

I know in some cases there's a VPN connection first, but depending,
that may require buying another copy of VPN client. And VPN and RDC
use the same encryption. So I just forward another port on the router
(3390) to that station, set that as the port in that station, and a
user can connect from home straight in (if they have the password).

Thanks
