Why doesn't "setting folder permisisons" ever end?

I've let it run for over 18 hours, yet it never completes and, in fact,
can't even be interrupted by the task manager.

Is there a set of bug fixes for the bugs in WindowsXP? This is clearly one
of them, as it occurs in a fresh install of networking and file+printer
sharing, all of which is quite automatic..

It seems to only be occurring on whatever system you are referring to on
whatever directory you are referring to (lack of information obvious at this
point) - not all systems - as I do not have this issue on any machines I
have installed and given the age of Windows XP - it would likely have been
reported many times over by now.

Please be much more specific about what you are doing, to what, where, on
what, etc. Local machine, certain directory? Network share? USB drive?
Firewire? eSATA? What directory structure? Formatted with what OS? etc
and so on...

It has nothing at all to do with "which directory". I'm attempting to allow
file sharing of the C: drive. The network guys seem to agree it's a WINDOWS
problem and not a network problem.

This is a commercial system purchased more with the configuration in which
it's running now with the exception that it has had the rather small
original HDD replaced with a larger one, since the original small drives are
no longer offered. There's no USB drive, there's no firewire, there's no
eSATA. Its file system is NTFS as formatted by WIndowsXP, and its directory
structure is exactly what XP puts in place automatically, with absolutely no
changes. This IS inconvenient, since the "explorer" doesn't always show the
entire pathname, and Windows came with at least three "Desktop" directories.
There's only one user, though the system seems to believe there's an "owner"
and an "all users" and one other "user", all of which came as part of the
initial installation.

I'm trying to share the entire 'C' volume, which has only about 55 GB of
data, on the LAN. It shared fine before the original HDD with the same
volume of data was replaced, Every other function on the LAN, including
sharing of the other machine's drive works fine, and has for quite a while.
However, THIS machine never completes the "setting folder permissions"
operation. There are some other quite unrelated "issues" but I hate to
mention more than one at a time for fear of having someone say, "Well, it's
a printer problem ... g'bye", , just as the networking crew has said it's a
WINDOWS problem and, hence, not their bailiwick.

I need to know how to get this machine, which has been a very reliable
workhorse ever since the release of WindowsXP, though I then wished it had
been equipped with '98SE instead, but new software required XP. It has a
mid-size (320GB PATA HDD, a couple of DVD's, attached, along with 2 GB of
RAM. Its printers, additional storage, etc, are all network-connected,
rather than directly attached, but I want to share the files on C: so I
don't have to run downstairs to view them. Since many of them have to
reside on C:, particularly the emails, etc, I want to be able to share
documents without transferring them to NAS.
