How do I get rid of the cricket like noise that chirps
for no apparent reason? I hear it coming from my speakers
so I know it's generated by some program.

Go into the Sound applet in Control Panel and look under each event to
see what sound file is assigned to each. Then play each until you hear
the sound to which you refer. If you match up the sound, you've found
the event assigned that sound. Otherwise, check what programs you have
currently loaded in Task Manager's Process tab panel.
