My daughters pc (a dell running windows xp), wont allow me to restore to an
earlier point , (it just comes up as a blank box, so does the mcafee
antivirus). We sometimes need to restore to get back the internet connection
from the router downstairs. Tried to do it in the safe mode but still the
same. Help please !

Is System Restore turned on? Go to Control Panel >System >System Restore.
Make sure the box is unchecked. Highlight your C: drive and click on
Settings. How much space is allocated? Have you done any updates, be it
Microsoft or otherwise, that turned SR off? If so, all previous restore
points will be gone. Try the McAfee forums for any help, too- it's notorious
for causing Windows problems.

Rather than use System Restore to get the connection back, try rebooting the
router..
